Question:
what is the diff

what is the differance between the gastric bypass and the vertical sleave. and what is the differance between the switch and the sleave.    — marybeth weaver (posted on October 8, 2009)

with the sleeve, 80$ of the stomach is removed and the remainder is made into a "sleeve" which is functionally the same as the original stomach but WAY smaller. with the bypass a small pouch is created from your stomach but it is NOT functionally the same as you don't have the pyloric valve at the bottom. the remainder of the stomach is left in place. the sleeve is actually PART of the DS. there is also a large malabsorptive component where juices from the pancreas do not mix with the food when it comes out of the stomach until way further down the intestine. you only will absorb 20% of the fat that you eat. it's probably the best surgery out there.

Jen gave a good comparison answer. I had the sleeve done on 7/31/09. With the sleeve, nothing is bypassed. The part of the stomach that is removed contains the grehlin (sp). That's what triggers your hunger. So far, I've had no nausea, no vomiting, and can eat anything I want. I'd highly recommend the sleeve. Hope this helps.

The vertical sleeve has the least amount of complications and is the least drastic surgery. With the VSG they take out the large part of the stomac and make it so you have a small banana shaped stomac and that's it. With Gastric bypass they make your stomac a small pouch and then cut your intestines and attach it directly to the pouch and then reattach the other part of your stomach and intestines farther on down. With the switch they first do the sleeve on the stomach and they they reconnect very far down your intestines. DS is the most drastic surgery with the highest amount of complications. It is usually recommended for patients that have very high amounts of weight to lose and for people with diabetes or many other co morbidities (medical issues associated with obesity). When I was checking on my surgery I googled several web sites that explained the different surgeries and then I went and talked to my surgeons assistant and we determined that the VSG was the best option for me. I had it on 3/25/09 and I have lost 80 lbs. I am currently at a platue and I need to exercise and really make a stronger effort at weight loss now. I am very happy with my surgey and my weight loss. I am off my sleep apnea machine and I feel great. I truly hope you slect the right surgery for you and that you have great success.

Hi there,I,ll add my 2 cents worth,The gastric sleeve is good, but duodenal switch is the better of the two,why have half the surgery when you can have the whole surgery!!!!Yes you get a better quality life with both surgeries.Yep I,d run from Rny and the band.If your insurance tell you its not cover, jump over to the ds board, there a lawyer call Diane cox,yep on the ds board can help get your choice surgery. After all you got to live with your choice! Please check out revision boards, there under surgical forums!
