Question:
Has anyone had BCBS cover a VSG?
I am trying to see if anyone's insurance (particularly BCBS of Louisiana) has ever covered them for a vertical sleeve gastrectomy? I have been preapproved for the lapband and but would rather have a VSG. — Urioste06 (posted on May 10, 2009)

I have BCBS of PA and they covered my VSG, the only requirement was to have
6 months supervised diet with a nut. I had mine done July 22 08 and have
lost 107 pounds and have hit my goal. I am so very happy with my results
and would do it again in a heartbeat!!!

I can not tell U about your exact form of BCBS but I can tell U I have a
form of it in NJ for Medicaid and it covered my VSG and yes I had to have 6
month supervised weight loss with a nutritionist also.

I had a VSG and BCBS of Michigan covered it all. In my case, I didn't need
to demonstrate the 6 month weight loss attempt because my BMI was 50+. Had
it not been, I would have had to document my 6 month doctor supervision
efforts.

Honestly, every plan, even within BCBS is different. Some cover it with
hardly any requirement. Some require months of supervised weight loss,
nutrition classes, etc. Some will allow it only if it can be proven it is
medically neccessary. Some, like mine, exclude ANY WLS, even if medically
neccessary. Period. Nothing can be done about exclusions.
You just need to check with your own plan. Call them and ask or get your
surgeon's office to check for you. They can find out the answer very
quickly.

I just had the VSG and I have BCBS of Michigan Tri - Med and they covered
everything 100%. I didn't have to be on the 6 months diet beforehand which
was nice. We have Messa so that could make a difference but I had no issues
at all. Good luck to you!
