Question:
Is it normal that I DO NOT DUMP on sugar?
I've been very careful on my diet, and one thing my NUT said I should try to figure out is how much sugar my body can handle. Well I've tried low sugar drinks, regular drinks [like OJ and such] and even M&Ms [half of the serving size]. I HAVE NEVER DUMPED....EVER!!!!!!!!! What does this mean. I cant eat things w/ fat or I'll vomit but nothing for sugar?? — nubiangodess624 (posted on September 17, 2008)

I dump off of High fat foods but havent dumped on sugar either. I am pretty
careful if I have anything with sugar its very little of it. But I drink OJ
every morning and have had bites off of my hubbys desserts. I dont think I
eat enough of it to dump though.

Everybody is different. Some patients will dump on one Life Saver, others
never dump on sugar. I don't dump on sugar, so I have to make wise
decisions on what I eat. Most patients will have some issues with sugar.
Since you don't seem to have issues with sugar, you have to make very wise
decisions on foods you eat. Sugar will normally cause diarrhea due to the
fact that sugar will quickly liquify and the large liquid sugar hitting
your intestines is the cause of the diarrhea. Diarrhea is one symptom of
dumping, but there may be other symtoms of dumping--anxiety, rapid heart
beat, sweating, nausea, etc. Fat may or may not cause dumping. It VARIES
for each patient. DAVE

I am the same way. I had open RNY in 1997. I have always been able to
tolerate sugar....candy, cakes, colas etc.....but fat just kills me. I had
to re learn how to eat and limit a lot of the fats I once craved and lived
off of. I learned to eat veggies and fruits in fats place. I can eat all
the sugar I want....but I limit it to only small serving sizes....like the
mini candy bites or small packs of M&M's etc. I still have to work
very hard not to want to eat a lot of sugar. But I have found it works to
by benefit not to be able to tolerate fat. And I found over time that it
was the high fat dairy foods that I couldn't tolerate......such as full fat
milks, cheeses etc. So I do skim milk or Lactaid and I eat harder cheeses
that are low fat. As the years have passed....I have been able to add
small amts of fat back into my diet but only in SMALL quantities and never
at the start of my day....but sometimes if I over do it....I will have
nausea and vomiting and/or dumping. I asked my MD about it...and he felt
it could have been related to the fact he also removed my gallbladder when
I had the gastric bypass. Not sure if you still have your
gallbladder....but that could be the case if you don't. If not....just go
with it. Your cholesterol and BP will thank you. My BP is perfect now, my
cholesterol is excellent and my cardiac risk if very low. So though I miss
my cheesecake, lasagna and cream sauces....I love my new slim figure and
healthy lifestyle. So for me....I have experienced the same thing...but
still managed to stay thin and eat nutritiously. Hope this helps. Good
luck!

It means you haven't dumped.... yet. I was 5 months out and had never
dumped. One day I little ice-cream bar while I was out with my daughter,
running errands. Not a usual food choice for me, but it was one of those
rare times, I ended up out after having not eaten.. Anyway. Five minutes
after i ate it, I was the sickest I have been in my life. My heart was
racing, I was sweating, I didn't know If I wanted to poop, or puke on
myself. I had to pull over, get in the back seat, and lay down, while my
daughter took over, and drove us home. I thought later, what if I had been
alone!!! But now, if you read enough profiles, and see how people gain
weight back after they are out from surgery a year or two, this is probably
why. You should not incorporate foods into your diet that do you no
nutritional benefit. You went thru surgery for obesity. Don't mess it up.
You were given another chance to fix it. Fatty foods made me nausiated at
times, but i didn't have the same racing heart, as with the icecream. So,
I don't eat greasy stuff now. Most people can handle about 15 grams of
sugar at a meal. That means, natural sugar, or carbs. Not raw sugar.
Good luck, and I hope you are having great success in your weight-loss
journey! Lesleigh

I can't imagine why your Nut wants you to find out how much sugar you can
handle. What good will that do? If you can tolerate some sugar...you
should still stay away from it anyway. It's not unusual for some people
tono dump. I know plenty of people who do not dump at all. Some of us are
very carb sensitve and some are just not. I accidentaly ate a protein bar
with 24 g of sugar and while I didn't dump...I did get a belly ache...so I
know I have a limit...but I try not to push the boundries of those
limits...I would not suggest you eat sugar just because you can! So many do
that...It's not worth it! I still watch my sugar as if I were still
diabetic and dumped on sugar...I am neither...but I don't want to lose
control! It would be so easy for me! I can handle fat too, but again, I
will order baked rather than fried 99 % of the time...(hey I'm not
perfect!) I do try to follow all the rules as close as I can. I've seen
so many gain weight back and I just cannot go back...I refuse!

I am 3 1/2 mths out and have not dumped with sugar, although I limit my
sugar intake. I have dumped twice at 3 mths, once taking a few bites of a
turkey sandwich and another time eating beef, made me throw up for at least
5 mins and felt sick for another 20

The only thing I have dumped on is ice cream. I can eat a bit of sugar,
drink a soda, eat fat greasy foods etc.......... and the only thing I ever
feel MISERABLE after is ice cream. I generally just stay away from desserts
and sweets because of that, but ice cream is the only specific item I know
of so far that makes me sick.
