Question:
Protein issues

Ok, so I have tried the protein shakes, the protein powders, I just can't tolerate them. So, from information that I have seen on this web site, there was a web address for products for gastric patients. One of the products that has been talked about on this OH.com is a protein pill from Nashua Nutrition! Have any of you ever used these as a form of protein supplement with your diets?    — teresasmiles (posted on March 9, 2008)

Hi, I have had a LOT of issues with protein. I hate them all. One of the best sites to get protein at is bariatriceating.com. I've ordered from them. I have not tried any protein pills. I have not liked any drink I've tried though. Even the ones that are more popular and people just "swear" they taste like chocolate milk .... or you can't even tell a difference. Well, I've tried almost all of them now - and not one is what I would say is even close to being "good". I was using a powder from Elite called mocha java which wasn't horrible, but still not something I could live with forever. But I would term it "tolerable". When you dissolve it in an ounce of cold water and then add it to some hot decalf coffee - and then add some of the DaVinci sugar free syrups - it was "tolerable" - but I found it was a lot of work to make that drink everyday. The Isopure ready to drinks were awful - they have this floating stuff in it that I like to call "floating snot", not too appetizing. I now drink one Achieve coffee drink a day (there is caffein in it so I only drink one), it has 20 grams protein. I usually add some of the DaVinci SF syrups to it. Those syrups are WONDERFUL for added flavor to anything. I also use the 3 ounce vials of New Whey Protein Bullets. They are 3 oz of liquid with 42 grams of protein. I add them to my 32 ounce bottle of Crystal Lite and they are *almost* not noticable. Nothing with a high amount of protein will be not noticable but this is the best I've found. I use the orange flavor with he Orange Tangerine or even the Rasberry Ice Crystal Lite. It is much more tolerable than anything I've tried. Just keep looking and trying until you've found what you can tolerate. Good luck!

First of all I would need to know how far out you are but, I was told the protien shakes are not good for you because of the Sugar content for one. I realize all Dr's are and have differant ideas. I am out 12 months and lost 248 lbs so far. I would suggest asking your Dr. But It took me a while to be able to eat even 4 pieces of chicken the size of yatzee dice. I never worried about the shakes etc. I was on soft foods longer than normal. Always remember to chew and EAQT SLOWLY !!! Can you do chicken yet? I just looked you arent out that long. Just relax you seem to be doing great! Always ask you Dr. or the staff. Bobby you can Email me anytime [email protected]

Yes, I've used them. You have to take about 10-12 a day, but you don't have to take them all at once. Each one is 3.8 grams of protein. They're actually not pills, they're capsules. I haven't experienced any bloating and any other stomach problems. They work for me...

I've been a protein user since time began and products are much better than they were! <shudder> That said, many times when I see these posts, I find that the products ppl have tried OR the way they made them up would, as we say here, gag a maggot. Certainly would gag me. I enjoy my protein, have for more than a decade now. Often use them to control cravings, cut my volume (like big family dinners) and otherwise de-stress myself, much like cigs, long ago. Any of these are what I use: 1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet). 2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken. 3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended. 4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or hand blender. They deliver 30g protein, less than 3g sugar, less than 200 calories, when made with water. Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat. I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of vit D3).

Theresa - I am one month out (2/12) and after buying all of the protein drinks and powders, I can't toleate any of them. What I am going is pushing proteins in my meals - shrimp, cheese, meats and its working! I can tolerate some of the bars (pure protein brand from Walmart is small and good) and am working that in. Am hoping that I can get around the protein drinks that way. Best of luck - am down 32 pounds! Hugs! Wanda

My solution is that I have a Carb Control Slimfast shake in the mornings for breakfast (20g protein, 1g sugar) and along the day I drink a New Whey Liquid Protein vial (42g protein, 0 sugar) that I have poured into my water and froze. I love having something cold and by freezing it, I drink it slowly. That gives me a total of 62g of protein - anything extra I eat throughout the day that has protein is above what I am required to have. This is my solution so that I don't have to be constantly counting my protein, I know automatically that I have over my 60g per day total. The slimfast in the morning is good for me because I'm rushing to work and getting my son to school. I can enjoy it at my desk once I get to work. Good Luck!

There is a product out there called Unjury, and it comes in different flavors, and also unflavored. My husband bought me vanilla and what I do is take two packs of Swiss Miss diet hot chocolate, 2 packets of splenda, 1 scoop of the vanilla unjury and a dash of cinnamon. I fill a large mug 3/4 of the way with boiling water and mix in the chocolate and splenda. Then I add 1/2 cup of skim milk to cool it off. Then I add the unjury and the cinnamon and stir well. It's REALLY good and you can't tell there is protein powder in it. I really hate the gritty protein drinks. It gives you a total of 28 grams of protein in the one mug of hot chocolate. Be sure NOT to put the unjury in the hot water because it changes the texture. Add your milk first. Hope this helps.

Don't know about the pills. I also hated the protein shakes. I didn't even like regular shakes before surgery! I did find one protien drink that I like. It is a product called Nectar, "Fuzzy Navel" flavor. I mix it with 8-16 oz of water and a Crystal Light To Go lemonade packet. It tastes like orange juice and has 90 cal. and 23g of protein. I ordered it on line and had it in two days. Good luck! Pat
