Question:
How much weight should we lose in the first three months.
Okay, I am feeling horrible because i keep reading about how some lose up to 40lbs in one month. I had gastric bypass on March 5th and I have only lost 29lbs, Im worried. is this normal? — summerday_99 (posted on May 31, 2007)

You can only compare yourself with someone who is the exact height and
weight as you. After 4 weeks I lost 17 lbs and doc said that was right on
track. The gauge is 20% of your excess body weight per month. So if your
excess body weight is 100 lbs-- the first month you may lose 20 lbs, the
2nd month 16 lbs and so on. Remember everyone loses differently and you
still have 29 lbs off. I wish mine would go faster- but if I have 40 lbs
off in 3 months so be it. Good Luck

Pretty much what the previous poster said. The more weight you have to
lose, the faster the weight comes off at first. I noticed the ones with
only about 100-150 pounds to lose were "slow" to lose the weight.
Hang in there and drink lots of water and exercise! Good luck!

I wouldn't compare yourself to anyone!! Everyone is DIFFERENT regardless of
they are you same height and weight. Your body/insides/metabulism/etc. are
all different....just like your fingerprint....you are different. Don't
freak out. Everyone loses at a different pace and rate. If you are truly
concerned, talk to your surgeon and your nutritionist and work out a plan.
A friend of mine is the same way - they set her up on a balanced diet and
exercise program - she's loosing quicker and better now. I would suggest
increasing your protein intake and increase your activity. Don't beat
yourself up. The number on the scale is only a number. Are your clothes
fitting better? ARe you losing inches? Are you feeling better? Do you feel
a difference? Go with the positives, work with the positives. Good luck!!

We are all different, and have different surgeries. I had the DS, and I
lost 30 pounds a month for the first three months. I was down 200 by my
first year anniversary. I know it's hard not to do, but everyone's body is
different, and yours will do what's best for it!

Your height, starting weight, age and sex all determine how fast your
weight loss will be.
I "only" lost 19lbs. the first month. At first I was upset, then
I remembered the above.
Eventually, I lost all I wanted and more. You never know! :D

Dear Liz,
As you can see we are all in the same boat; and I agree with alot of the
replies here! I am about 4 months post op and have only lost about 43 lbs.
since surgery; I lost 27 before since Dec 06 (sugery feb 07). Still I have
lost lots of inches; and went from size 24 to a 16! Haven't been this size
in years. Just take care, follow the plan, keep up on your protein and
water. We will all make it one step and one day at a time. I am already off
alot of medications, and doing more than I have in years. Best wishes to
your continued sucess! Sincerely, Judy R.

Hi Lizeth, and thanks for asking your question. You know, many times we
are obese because we guage ourselves against or by someone or something
else. You have to fight that behavior. You are doing great. I am 3 years
post op, and although I lost better in the beginning, I really lost an
average of 10 pounds per month during the first 12 to 14 months. I lost a
total of 120 pounds, and have kept it off. I am thankful for that. Don't
worry about the time, and don't ever look at others for what they are
doing. Do right, keep steady and forward in your own progress, and you
will be fine. You are in a race by yourself, don't be distracted by others
success or failure. You are really doing great. Stick with protein, water
and exercise, and you have the best shot and the best result. That is why
you had surgery, so you just need to stay focused. Celebrate what you have
lost and what others have lost, but don't compare, it only hurts you. Take
care, Patricia P.

Hi, I am so glad you asked this question. I am 3 weeks out and have not
lost any weight in the last 2 weeks. I found my self crying one day because
I thought something went wrong. Reading all the replys you have received to
your question has helped me quite a bit. I did not know that the less
weight you have to lose the slower you lose. Again thanks. Cheryl T.

Oh my gosh,,, I had my gastric bypass on March 6 and have only lost 34
pounds. I really had to struggle to lose that amount. I have been
exercising regularly and have lost some inches. I talked to a dietician
and she said that losing weight slowly could be a plus in our favor. We
may not get so much sagging skin. Everyday I weigh myself (which I know I
shouldn't do) and I keep hoping for more results. Even so, I feel so much
better from doing exercise and I am happy to say that I have been taken off
some of my meds. Keep me posted on your progress. Good Luck to us
both....Shelley
