Recently heard you can suffer a heart attack after surgery.

Has anyone else heard of this? Is it likley for a person who is 250 lbs? with no heart problems.    — angel4 (posted on March 13, 2007)

Like with any surgery your body goes in to a "shock". There are always risks with any surgery. A lot of the cases that you see that the patients have had heart attacks or other things is because they had extreme underlying health problems. Talk with your Dr. about your individual risk. Good Luck

As Amy said there is always a risk with surgery. If you have ever had any heart work-up at all, they should give you a stress test on the treadmill. I didn't pass mine and they found that I had a blocked artery and they put a stint in. It delayed my surgery but I finally did get it and I am now 4 months out and expecting to have a hysterectomy in May.

Do you mean like in the first few hours or days after surgery or that we are more prone in life, as post-ops?

If your doctor is thorough as mine was, you will need a cardiac clearance. I didn't have any heart problems before surgery but my cardiologist insisted on a stress and echocardiogram before signing the consent form. I was 223 before surgery and had a textbook operation. You should be fine but make sure you get all the clearances so there are no surprises.

The best surgeons do lots of annoying, uncomfy, inconvenient tests for our protection. Its a EXTREMELY RARE thing, and pre op cardiac clearance is a good thing. If you have a family history of heart troubles or other reasons to be concerned ask for a stress test to be on safe side. Much larger risks are from blood clots post op from too much laying around. Blood clots can cause heart attacks, perhaps that was the underlying cause of the heart attack? Anyhow WLS is the BEST DECISION I EVER MADE IN MY LIFE!

You hear all kinds of things happening after surgery. They do all the tests they can to determine the condition of your heart/lungs/body, but only God can make things go smooth. You can have a poor surgeon, but God is in control. When I did research on wls, I ran accross an article that said the lower stomach sometimes get stomach cancer, and it becomes a real problem to diagnose. I asked about this, and sure enough it can happen, but not because of wls, but if they were pre-disposed to stomach cancer, it will still happen. Things will still happen, but not necessarily because of wls. You can strenghen your heart and body before surgery by exercise and diet, and give it the best support you can, but I have found that doing this is a good thing, the best thing I did prior to surgery is to have my relationship with Jesus Christ in a right condition, to know He was in control and that I could trust him, and that no sin or bitterness was left in me prior to surgery. That way if He choose to let complications set in, I was ready to see Him. The peace of that condition put me in the right place for surgery spiritually physically. If you would like to know more about Jesus Christ, just ask. Take care, Patricia P.
