Question:
Re Phrase My Question
Trena here again: I guess I didn't phrase my question correctly. What I am asking is; Is it normal to lose a lot of weight then none at all this early after surgery? Do others have this so early post op? What did you do differently? I know that will happen from time to time but I didn't think it would be this sporadic this soon after surgery. I realize everyone is different but when I talk to others or read about them, they all seem to have some sort of weight loss going on from the beginning and don't slow down or plateau until they're much further out post op. I don't count too much on my weigh scales. I usually go by the doctors scales. This is a bit confusing because I seem to be very sporadic. — trenansac (posted on December 15, 2006)

Hi Trena. I am almost 3 weeks out and I am experiencing the same thing.
I took a big loss the first week - about 20 pounds and it's stayed there
for the past two weeks until today when I went down another 2 pounds.
From what I've read, this is normal. It's a combination of metabolism,
hormones, and your body adjusting to the changes (e.g. going into
"survival" mode.) Yes, it can be frustrating... I yell at my
scale, "Here I am on fluids only, and this is the best you can do?
What's wrong with you?" LOL. But I know it will work itself out,
especially once I get clearance to go back to the gym. Good luck! Patty.

Trena, it's normal. My wife kept a constant chart of her weight loss after
surgery. She would drop several pounds as if over night then go a few days
to a few weeks without losing anything. On visits to the surgeon he told
us this was very common. Everyone's body adjusts to the surgery in it's
own way. It was not uncommon for her to plateau from time to time from as
early as six weeks out, if you count a couple of days as a plateau. Get
your own scale and start measuring. Even when no weight loss is taking
place the body can be adjusting and you will still lose inches. Good luck
Trena, I hope this helps you.

Congratulations Trena on your brave decision to have wls! I went through
the same thing also. I am almost 4 months post op and have lost 56 lbs.
But the weight drops in spurts. I have noticed that on the weeks I am not
losing lbs, I am losing inches. It is an exciting process, so try to
embrace the process, EXERCISE, proteins first and lots of H2O. You may be
sporadic the whole time just like me but one day you will be totally amazed
at what you have accomplished! It is going to happen ~ Blessings and Merry
Christmas

I was the same way, allot at once and then a little. Sporadic is the name
of the game. I have read this on many boards I have been on. If you are
following the pouch rules you are doing fine.

I know that for every 30 lbs. I lost, my body would stop losing for about a
month in between .. like playing catch up. This has been fairly constant
since my surgery a year ago. I started at 310 and I'm down to 178 .. and
still hitting those plateaus .. you're body will go at the pace it needs to
go at. Just keeping doing the things you are supposed to be doing like
exercise, getting in plenty of water, eating when you should be and getting
to know your new stomach. You are still new out yet - give your body a
chance to adjust.

Wow, Tina, you lost as much weight in the first week as I lost in the first
month! Congratulations. It is perfectly normal for the body to trake a
bit in between losing pounds. My husband calls it a"an adjustment
period." You body usually is reshifting things at that time. I
suggest you do not even step on the scale more than once a week, or even
once every two weeks.
Meanwhile, you are doing great!
