Question:
Are you guys able to take in this much?
I went thru the old files on this but they were old and I wanted some "fresh" responses. I am only 4 days post-op...and on liquids only....not even soups yet, but with a stomach 1-2 oz???...I just had almost a cup of broth, 2 1/2 suger free popsicles and drank lots of fluids within a less than a 1/2 an hour! Is this because liquids pass thru the stoma fast? Everyone says, "sip, sip!" But I am scared, because I can "GULP!" and then SOME! — Kayla (posted on February 27, 2006)

Kayla, believe it or not there are days when you will consume more and days
when you will consume less. Liquids do pass more quickly through your
system, that is why it is very important to follow your health care
providers dietary guidelines for you. Just because you can, doesn't mean
you need to. Welcome to the loosing side friend. It's a great trip. KEA

hey, i had mysurgery october 18th 2005, down 100lbs, and for the first week
i was able to GULP big time, and didn't lose any weight and i was nervous
it wasn't going to work, and then i was able to eat solids sooner then most
and i was nervous that something was wrong or maybe i busted something and
that's why i could eat... but trust me when you start to consume heavier
foods, like chicken or steak, you will realize how small your stomache is.
Somedays i can eat more than i ever thought i could with this surgery, and
other days all i can do is sip water and protein shakes all day because any
solid food makes my side hurt and makes me feel sick.... it differs all the
time. but don't be worried....

Hello, I am 5 yrs. Post-Op. I just wanted to tell you not to worry. The
reason it seems like you can take in so much is because liquid basicaly
shoots right through you. The fact that you dont have tummy irritation is a
good sign some cant even drink the first weeks. At least you can get your
fluids in. Wait till you get on solids it will be a wholeeeee Different
story. I could drink pretty regular myself at first. The fluids wont stay
long so you can drink more at a quicker pace... Solid foods will nip that
in the butt. When you do get on solids here is a way to test how much you
can get into your pouch. Take a tub of cottage cheese small curd tightly
packed. Before you do anything poor water on top to the rim of the tub dump
it into a measuring cup. That much you will subtract from your final
figure. Then Start eating until you are full. Fill the tub back up with
water dump it into a measuring cup and subtract your initial part you
dumped out that was just measuring the space and that will give you about
how many oz. Or C. your pouch can hold. Once your tummy is healed and you
are eating solids on a regular basis. You should beable anywhere to 1C to
1C. 1/2 This is normal for a Pre-op of a year or better. Hope this helps.

Hi Kayla! I too, am a Gluper. I find it almost impossible for me to just
sip, when I'm extra thirsty. If I don't drink enough during the day, I'll
eat a bite of this or a bite of that, between meals....and never really
quenching my thirst..AND, causing my weight loss to slow down. I am
learning to drink before eating. I know all of the rules but, when you
start feeling like a new person, you tend to get a little sidetracked. My
surgery was Nov.21. I've only lost 50lbs. I'm hoping to have a more
promising weight loss at my next appointment with the surgeon. I buy
bottled water and Lipton's green tea packets....when mixed up well, I pop a
bottle or two into the freezer for about 45 minutes. Then I gently bang the
bottle to losen ice and shake. I love it!! It gives me something to munch
on while getting more water into my body. Crystal light and deluted juices
work as well. Good Luck!

How much can you drink in 15 minutes? Perhaps have your popsicle and wait
the rest of the 15 minutes? Then drink water til it's time for a
"meal" again?
