Question:
will i always need to wait 1 hour before drinking after a meal or a snack?
I have lost 75% of the weight i need to lose. My diet is more flexible now, and I add some fruit or other things as a snack. Do I need to wait another hour after a meal or snack? — FRAN L. (posted on June 9, 2004)

I still do. I am 2 yr out. If I drink after I eat it makes me hungrier
faster. The longer I wait the less I am hungry

It is really up to you. If you don't wait the hour you will get hungry
faster. I was drinking a lot after dinner and finally have realized I have
been eating 2 dinners because of tat. Having a snack at 10 at night is not
good! I guess it depends on the person. If you can control your hunger
then it doesn't matter. I can't.

I'm 3 years out and I still have to wait. If I don't, I get hungry
quickly, and find myself in the kitchen scrounging around for more food.
More food means weight gain, at least for me. Recently I went on a cruise
and intentionally drank with my meals so that I could eat more often (it
was only for four days!). I managed to pack on 5 pounds with this method.
Thankfully, it came off quickly. Bad me :)

We were taught the 30-20-30 rule, so waiting one hour to drink is a long
time. We were told, stop drinking 30 minutes before you eat, always take
20 minutes to eat your meal, and wait for 30 minutes after you eat to
drink. I volunteer at a Bariatric pre-op class at the hospital, and that
is what they teach.

I've been taught it's forever.........always wait at least 30 minutes after
eating. I always 45 minutes to an hour afterward. I've heard that starting
to drink with meals is a sure way to hit plateaus or gain because you're
hungry more often and so eat more often.

I concur! I'm 16 mos out and am finally having better luck with being
compliant - and seeing the scale go down from an unfortunate bounce up
-yikes!- by remembering the half hour before and an hour after. For me,
anyway, it's been a huge help. Good luck - and congratulations of your
loss.

although I didn't have the rny, it is my understanding that if you drink
with your meal, it forces the food through your pouch and therefore causes
you to eat more, hence being hungrier and maybe gain weight: at least that
is what the dr tells our post-op support group. I guess it's just one of
those conditions we live with to help our surgery do its job. I'm sure it
will get easier for you. It is a big change for us all, but we can be each
others cheerleaders!

I've been drinking with my meals since my surgery over 2 1/2 years ago.
I've never had a problem. I lost all my weight in 9 months and I've kept
it off since then.

You should contact your doctor's office and ask that question because each
doctor has their own rules for the drinking before and after meals. Good
luck.

I take " baby sips" w/ my meals. This helps me, but as we all
say...everyone is different.
