Question:
How to answer questions without going into a lecture on WLS's.
If anyone has any good way of explaining the actual surgery to family and friends who know and ask please let me know. It seems that without knowing what we all know about our bodies and the different operations and what it intails, comprehension isn't good for some. Suggestions? — MaryLisa D. When I first explained what I was hoping to do to my family I first made
sure I knew everything I possible could about the surgery, Like, what they
did, what the risk where and what was going to be accomplished. Then I sat
down and actually drew it out for them, so they could see for themselves
what it entailed. I also pointed out the major success of Carnie Wilson and
Ann Wilson, and now you can use Al Roker. Celebrities will bring a sense of
familiarity to them, even if they don't understand completely, they know
that Al Roker had it and lost a bunch of weight, so it must be ok. Be
prepared, so you can answer all their questions. Your knowledgable position
on this will help assure you family that you know what your doing. Good
Luck, We've all been through it, you'll do great!!!

I have found a good way to show friends and family what the surgeon will
actually do to me. Mabye it will work for you too. If you have a printer,
click on "Your Journey", then click on "Researching Weigh
Loss Methods", then click on "Types of Surgery", and print.
This way, you have an actual illustration of the type of surgery you will
have or have had. Keep it in your purse and when someone asks you info,
it's right there at your fingertips. Good Luck!

There's an area on this website that you can find out about the 5 types of
WLS which gives the details with advantages and disadvantages as well as
the benefits and what to expect. Also go to ASBS (American Society of
Bariatric Surgeons-www.asbs.com) You will get pictures and a wealth of
information there. I'm not sure if there is a *good* way of explaining it
if you are not a medical person or if no one in your family has any
workable medical knowledge. Perhaps obtain this information, print it out
then give it to them to read for themselves. If they don't understand
perhaps you can arrange a time with your surgeon to discuss this with a few
family members and they can pass the word to the others....????Or simply
"I'm having a type of WLS that will restrict the number of calories
and the amount of food that I take in and/or absorb". "This will
cause me to lose much needed weight in order for me to live a healthier,
happier and longer life." "I know you do not understand and
probably think I just need to go on a real good diet, but I've done that,
and diets just don't work." "I ask that you love me, support me
and respect the fact that I am taking charhe of my health." Hope this
helps!! Sincerely, "Yourdivaness" ~
