Question:
Has anyone ever self payed and then had a complication arise?

I am a self pay and had some problems in the hospital. As a result of
these problems, I spent 6 extra days (total of 8 days) in the hospital.
This added about $9500 to my cost. Funny part was my insurance would not
pay for the surgery, but they are picking up the $9500 tab. Seems they
covered the complications.

I was told that even though my insurance wouldn't pay for surgery (I self
paid and they ended up paying little parts of my bills) if I had a
complication and needed further treatment... the insuance would pay. I
guess because then it would be medically necessary. I didn't have any
complications though.

I didn't self-pay but my insurer told me that if I had the surgery without
approval they could deny it and all charges that resulted from it -
including complications. Ack! Scared me. Fortunately zero complications.
Good luck!
