Question:
How can you drink alarge amount of water so soon?
I do not understand how you can drink so much water so soon after surgery. I am to have surgery 10-28-2002 and I don't see how a person can drink so much water very soon after surgery. — Cynthia M. (posted on October 1, 2002)

It's really easy, water and any other liquid pretty much run through you,
they don't sit in your pouch for any length of time. Initially, after your
surgery, you won't be able to drink more than 1-2 ozs at a time, but as you
heal, it's going to get easier. Right now, I'm 7 months post op and can
drink 1 litre in about an hour w/no problems!

I am 11 days post op and I am drinking water all the time. I NEVER drank
water before, but since my surgery I am very, very thirsty and water is the
only thing that kills the thirst and doesn't cause any discomfort in my
tummy. That's good enough for me. Also, my skin looks really good.
Should have done this years ago.

I am 14 days post op. I was never thirsty before, now I can't get enough
of the old H2O. At first I could only take sips, but now I'm building up
to be able to take gulps. I carry my water bottle EVERYWHERE I go. Good
luck to you!

It is possible to get all your water in if you sip it all the time. You'll
get use to bringing water with you everywhere you go. Because you won't be
getting enough water through the foods you eat, you'll actually be thursty.
All I drink now is water, you'll get use to it. Good Luck on your surgery.

Liquids will go straight through you, especially when your pouch is empty,
as in the first 10 days. You will actually feel it going through you, it
doesn't stay in your pouch. Also, just a tip, I found warm liquids went
thru easier, I am drinking a lot of decaf hot tea, not a coffee drinker, I
am 2 weeks postop and can drink 10 oz. in about 1/2 hr.

I am 9 1/2 months post op and I can drink tons of water, pretty quick.
It's when I let myself get thirsty and gulp gulp gulp real quick that I
have a problem. It's just a little ouchy uncomfortable for a couple
minutes and then it passes through. I drink at least 3 liters of
water/crystal lite a day. I found that right after my surgery I was very
thirsty. Our doctor had us use sippy cups and I had one with me all the
time. Sip sip sip and you will get at least most of your water in.

I am the opposite...I have to have COLD water, very cold. Warm water is
NASTY. I have no problem with water and can easily drink 2 32oz bottles of
water @ work each day. I can even gulp, guzzle, etc...I have always been
drinker of water, so, maybe this is why.

The first few days after surgery (lap RNY), I had to sip (and I had that
nasty salty taste in my mouth). But after about 5 days I was able to drink
like I would normally. I don't know if you know this (and I didn't read the
other responses), but when you drink, it goes directly through your pouch
and into the intestines- it doesn't sit in your pouch and fill you up. Hope
this helps!
