I don't know why it made you sick....unless you put sugar or butter on
it....if so, you may have dumped. Have you tried cream of wheat or grits??
Good Luck

How much did you eat? What was in it.. ie how much fat, milk etc? Did you
eat it quickly?

Dear Shelley,
I'm just pre-op, but I have a copy of my surgeon's diet (I also have it
posted at my website). Anyways :0) My surgeon allows oatmeal (with no
sugar & only non=fat milk)...but he requires that we strain it. All
the juices, but none of the oats until about 4 months out...maybe this will
help. Sorry to hear about your problem...is really sucks because I love
oatmeal!
Good Luck!

Have you tried single-cereal, sugar-free baby oatmeal? Sort of like
papier-mache - but there you go, the cereal is pre-strained to come out
very smooth. Try it with a little salt.

Shelley--I hear what the other posters are saying about trying other
variations, but I know sometimes you just want what you want. That being
said, don't feel bad about getting a little sick. I was able to try
oatmeal at 2 weeks too. I had no problem with that, but I have problems
with others. I'd get discouraged when I'd see from this site that people
are eating everything and not getting sick. I actually started worrying
that my stoma was scarring and getting blocked because of my vomiting. My
doctor checked it out, and he told me point of fact that some people just
run on a different schedule. Your body may just not be ready yet for what
you are trying. When something gives you trouble, give it a week or two
and try again. I'm now at 2 months, and I can tolerate things now I
couldn't before. Don't get discouraged, just remember that you'll be able
to have it soon. But as the other posters said, make sure you chew very
well and eat slowly. These are two other things that have caused me to be
sick when not obeyed. Best of luck. Keep trying!

Cream of Wheat sounds like a better bet. Oatmeal is kind of fibrous . . . I
made thin cream of wheat like the recipe for babies and put a little butter
and Splenda in it. After the liquid diet it was like caviar!

The very same thing happened to me 3 weeks out. I thought oatmeal would be
a safe food but it came right back up. I agree cream of wheat will probably
go down much better. Thats what I keep hearing but I haven't tried it yet.
Good luck.

My surgeon starts his RNY patients on full liquids (including oatmeal,
cream of wheat, grits, etc...) the day of discharge, 2 days post-op.
Regular oatmeal will probably be too fibrous and "bulky", so I
would suggest the packs of instant oatmeal. Be sure that it is
"unflavored", and sugar-free (use artifical sweetener if needed).
It will also help to make it a little more "soupy" than usual
and take very small bites and very small amounts to start with. Perhaps
only another Southerner could identify with this, but grits with some
melted Mexican Velveeta cheese was a heavenly comfort food during those
early post-op days for me :-) Don't give up on any particular food just
because it makes you vomit the first time you try it....everything is trial
and error post-op....the next time may be a much better experience. Good
luck!

As a new post-op, I made it just how I wanted (but used artificial
sweetner) then buzzed it through the blender for a minute. It tasted great,
but went down a little easier. I only tried to eat a one oz. cupfull at a
time though. you still need to eat very slowly and take TINY bites.
