Question:
Hi, has anyone since surgery became pregnant while on birth control pills?
I guess im just kinda nervous. I met a new man and I will be starting oral contraceptives in a week. I just want to make sure that they will absorb properly and that I wont become pregnant.. Thanks, Angel — Angel G. (posted on July 23, 2000)

In my group session with my surgeon he did say one needs to be very careful
with birth control pills because of poor absorption. Have you thought of
the Depo shots
they may be a safer option.

I have a close friend and member on this site who became pregnant on the
pill. Part of her pre-op testing included a pregnancy test, even though
she was on this pill. It was prior to that test that "it
happened" and it was too early for the blood test to pick up a
positive result. For 7 months she thought the strange sensations she was
having and lack of a period were due to the surgery because pregnancy just
wasn't a factor and her doctors didn't even consider the possibility of
pregnancy. The "father" is no longer in the picture and there
hasn't been anyone since. Her gyn didn't test her for pregnancy till last
month (after putting her through alot of other tests first) Well her baby
is due the end of August (BIG SUPRISE). The only answer anyone seems to
have is that prior to surgery, due to nerves, her hormone output was
probably greatly increased and the pill didn't work. Mind you, she had
been on the pill faithfully for 4 years. My only advice is BE CAREFUL!
Luckly all tests show that the baby is fine. My friend even lost 72 pounds
through this whole process. She's very very lucky but alot of women this
has happened to are not.

Hi. My surgeon reassures me that birth control pills will be normally
absorbed post-op. I've been on them 3 months and have been protected.
