Question:
success with RNY after 60
Has anyone had a similar experience? I had RNY Dec 22 @ age 60. Although I have followed dietary and exercise guildelines, I have lost NOTHING since January 1. Is is my age a factor? Will things kick in eventually? — Linda D. (posted on February 26, 2010)

I had RNY at the end of April last year. I'm 55 and it started sorta
slowly, but as of today, I have lost 115 pounds. I really believe it will
happen for you too. GOOD LUCK and hang in there. It WILL happen!

I am 58. I had a RNY on 12/29. I am steadily losing weight. I have lost
at least 40 pounds. I think that you should visit your nutritionist to
review your diet. Also, you may want to ask your doctor about the
possibility of thyroid problems or other issues. There is no reason that
you should not be losing weight if you follow all the guidelines. Two
months is too long of a stall. Age should not be a factor.

I am 54 and had RNY on 11/17. I have lost 45 pounds since my surgery date
and 54 if I add my pre-op liquid diet loss. Have your thyroid checked,
even if it was recently evaluated. Last May my thyroid labs were normal,
but by August it was retested after I gained 14 pounds in 4 weeks.
Nodules were found and I was placed on medication. I know I am losing
slower than most, but I know it has to come off eventually as long as I
follow my plan. Good luck.

How frustrating. I would think that the weight loss would have to begin
soon. I'm 59 and lost 50 pounds in 3 months but have been at a stall the
past week which I hear is normal.

Hi Linda, I had RNY 2 years ago at age 61. On the same day a young lady of
38 had the same surgery. We keep in touch and through our weight loss phase
me compared our losses. I was a very, very slow losser. She and I never
understood why I lost so slow and she shed the weight so fast but I was
happy as the inches seemed to slid off fast but not the pounds. I am now 25
pounds below goal, weighing in at 125 daily. I am healthy and my diabetes,
high blood pressure, colestoral (sp?) and depression medicines are all in
the past. I now only take my vitiamins daily! Please hold steadfast and you
will shed the pounds. You may be a slow losser as I was. I went from size
26 pants to size 2 and size 3x tops to size small/x small. I now have
trouble finding clothes small enough. I never knew I was a tiny petite
woman because I had been a plus size for over 40 years of my life. For the
first time in my life I am the happy to be in public! I smile
constantly!!!! Be faithful to the plan it will work. With kindest regards,
Conn

I am 65 and had surgery Jan 27. To date I have lost 20 lbs but losing
inches faster. I think the older the person, the slower the loss. I am
patient though and know it will come off.
