Never! You should get used to stop drinking at least 30 minutes prior and not drink at least 30 minutes after. I chew gum to keep me from drinking too soon after eating. The reason is to let your food stay in the pouch as long as possible so you can absorb as much as possible and after a year or so, so you do not get hungry.

Never, my Dr and Nut say, no fluids 10 minutes before eating and no fluids until 30 minutes after eating. You do get used to it.

Before surgery, I thought this would be a big issue for me too. Amazingly at 3 months post-RNY, it's not a problem. Much of my food is liquid anyway. If I need to have a tiny sip of water when I eat, I do. But the miracle is that once the pounds started melting off, I lost all interest in anything except losing weight. Don't worry. Best success!

I take tiny sips when I eat, and I encourage you not to do this. I do it because I have a spastic, restricted esophagus and have to have occasional esophageal expansions and if I don't, my food never makes it to my pouch. Sometimes it still doesn't no matter how small the bite, how well it's chewed and how long between bites, and is simply will come back up. I wish I could follow that rule, but I seem to be doing what I am doing properly as it has worked for me and it's staying off. I'm still losing at a year and a half. :)

I agree you really shouldn't eat and drink together. When you're new from surgery you won't be eating anything dry so needing a liquid won't be an issue. Later if you chew your food the way you should it will be liquid by the time you swallow it. Occasionally I do need to take a sip of something to wet my mouth when eating. This happens once in a great while...I'm almost 2 years out and I can only remember a couple times I needed to do this.

I thought this was going to be the biggest nightmare of all but it turned out not to be as bad as I thought. It's been 3 years for me and I still don't drink with my meals. What I do is put three/four grapes on my plate and pop one in my mouth whenever I want a drink. The grapes are refreshing.

it isn't that much of a hardship. I am 20 months out and don't miss it at all. If I think I will need a drink I drinka lot before I eat...I mean a lot...then wait to eat then eat..I have never had a problem. I wait the full hour after. When you drink and eat you flush the food thru and you become hungrier faster and you wash the food thru so quickly it doesn't get absorbed as well and malnutrition can set in. Just try to do without. best of luck! hugs, kim

Never, if it doesn't cause dumping in you it makes your "new tool" not work. If the food slides right through you won't feel full.

For me it has been a year. I am now able to eat and drink at the same time.
