Question:
Dumping & Sugar
I know it varies from person-to-person, but how many grams of sugar usually cases someone one to dump? I love V8, and it has 8 gms/8 ozs. Could that cause dumping, and what is a good number to follow? — dasie (posted on November 6, 2009)

Hi I am 3 yrs out and I find myself staying around that number. I started
out with 1/2 serving (4) grams and go from there. Increase gradually.
Like you said everyone is different. You may be able to tolerate a little
more or less. Good Luck

Hi, Iam 16 months out and just looked at the info I was given before my
RNY..and it say to not go over 4 grms. At this point I KNOW over that makes
me dump. Not fun no way no how. Best of luck to you.

I found my safe number is 12-14. You just have to experiment. I also dump
on greasy foods after having my gall bladder out, regardless of the sugar
in it. So I avoid those.

I've never dumped, and I've had sugared drinks, like sweet tea. I guess I'm
just lucky. Only thing I won't/can't have is large bread product servings,
like pizza crust, spaghetti, etc. They make me queasy.

Hi! You are right, it does vary from person to person, but my clinic
recommends staying in the single digits. Tho I can drink milk which has 11
grams per 8 ounces and i tolerate 16 ounces at a time. But, of course, some
natural sugars affect us differently too. I would say if you stay in the
single digits you will be ok. Why push it , right?Best of luck ! hugs,Kim

It takes a really big sugar load to make me dump, i.e. two pina coladas
back to back. No idea how much sugar that is but I know it's a huge amount.
One drink I was ok, but the next day I had two and man was I sick. Live and
learn

Hi, I'm 20 months out, have lost 110 lbs. and I can have as much sugar in
the form of candy, cookies, and cake as I want, if I want to, but I don't.
I can't have anymore than 1/2 C. milk products such as ice cream, or milk
or I will dump bad. It seems as though I've become lactose intolerant. So
you see, everyone is different. Good luck, Paula B.

Hi! I would consult the dietician at your bariatric center. When I
asked, mine told me it depends on the kind of sugar. For example, they
reccomended making a protein shake with pineapple juice which has like
32grams of sugar. She said it depends on the type, like fruit is all high
in natural sugars, not processed sugars. However, each person is different
and you kind of have to experiment. I, unfortunately find where I can eat
almost anything. Good luck.
