Question:
Have you ever experienced a plateau

Have you ever experienced a plateau....I am currently experiencing one and it has been about a month. I am eating and drinking properly and I exercise at least 3-5 times per week. I'm concerned I am going to be stuck on this plateau indefinitely...any suggestions?    — cxperr01 (posted on September 30, 2009)

I am currently 9 months post gastric bypass RNY surgery. I started at 286 and am now down to 170. I have hit many plateaus along the way. The longest one being about 6 weeks at about 6 months post op. It is completely normal. Your body just has to "catch up to itself". When I was stuck at my longest plateau, I swore I wasn't going to lose anymore weight..and then BAM...lost another 20 lbs over the next couple of weeks. Hang in there. If you don't lose anymore weight in a couple of months maybe try talking to your surgeon or the nutritionist. Also, try going back to the liquid diet (puree) and cut out carbs or cut down your portions. Keep up with the exercise. Good luck...I was also wondering which surgery you had and how far out you are?

try changing up your routine...eat more protein and try eating at differnt times..maybe wait an extra hour before eating. I hit plateaus all the time and was a very slow loser until I found my sweet spot..then it melted off and I met goal in 10 months. I would talk to your nut about what you are eating and if its enough. i wasn't eating enough and my body was in starvation mode. However, having said this...plateaus are your bodies normal way of catching up to the changes its going thru. They are normal and i really don't know of anyone who hasn't experienced one. maybe not lasting a month, but a week at least. Also, be sure you aren't dehydrated. Being dehydrated can make you not lose anything! Best of luck to you! hugs, kim

A month out of surgery,I had a 5 week plateau followed a week later by a 3 week plateau. I freaked and went to an accupressurist. He did blood work, including an adrenal stress test, and then did organ manipulation of things like adrenal glands, thyroid glands, other glandular systems, most of which were "broken". He also put me on a diet of lean protein and GREEN vegetables, with oil, vinegar, nuts, l/f cheese, Omega 3,conjugated linoleic acid, and acetyl-L-arnitine. Honestly, it still seems like mumbo jumbo, but now, 7 months out, I have not had another plateau. I'm down 122 lbs. My weight loss has slowed to 2 lbs a week (BMI still 49), but no plateaus. Others have said that a plateau at 7 months is normal. I'm hoping to beat that. I haven't started exercising regularly yet; that's next. If you hit a plateau, the advise to do something different is sound, common sense. Go to a support group. Talk to your nutritionist. We got into this mess by being complacent; we need to be vigilant and think our way out. Your question is a great start! May God bless you.

I think the question should be " has anyone NOT experienced a plateua?"!!! Mine has been since February! The good thing I guess is that I haven't gained anything either! How's that for positive, ha?!

I will be 2 months RNY post op this week and I am in a plateau. The week of Sept. 19th I lost 12 lbs. Since then I've stayed the same (296lbs). I'm hoping I start losing again, but I am wondering if when it's close to that time of the month if you plateau?

I am 5 years post-op. Believe me, we all hit plateaus (and occasionally even gain a little weight). This is a lifestyle change to improve your health, not a get-thin-quick scheme. The main thing is to get back to the basics when you are having problems. Keep a food and exercise journal for a couple of weeks to see what you are "really" doing. This can help you identify problems. Also, keep track of your measurements. You may not be loosing pounds, but might be loosing inches. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. So, if you are exercising and building muscle, you will initially not loose pounds, but that muscle will burn more fat, even when you're not doing anything. Your body need plateaus occasionally just to readjust to the changes going on from the weight loss. If you find you are following all of your surgeon's recommendation and still can't loose weight, show him your food and exercise log to make sure you are getting enough nutrition. It is possible to actually get too few calories (esp. if you exercise regularly). When that happens, your body thinks you are starving it, and will lower your metabolism for survival. I would not get concerned unless you start gaining weight over the next month or two. I agree with the other person who posted an answer. You are NOT gaining weight, and that is a blessing. Remember that this is a life long journey to health. I feel 20 years younger and would not trade that for anything. I have been at my goal weight for almost 2 years. Just think of this plateau as proof positive that you can maintain a healthy weight once you reach your weight loss goal. God Bless.

It won't last forever, so don't panic! I hit one at about a month and a half. Mine lasted three weeks. Its actually a good thing - it gives the rest of your body (skin) a chance to catch up with the weight loss. I went through two long plateaus. The second one started at about 8 months out. That one lasted over a month!!!
