Question:
Is it normal to feel like my food just stuck?
I had my by-pass 9 days ago. I am on liquids but it feel like it gets stuck and it gives me a feeling of wanting to burp and I can't. — newchapter09 (posted on July 1, 2009)

Even when you are on liquids, if you drink them to fast, it will give you
that "stuck" sensation. Sip them. If you are dealing with this
now, simi-solids and solids, will be worse. I had the same problem, but
once I slowed down and really paid attention to my eating & drinking
habits, my problems went away. I am almost 2 years out (lost 100 lbs.)and
still, if I don't pay attention & swallow food to fast, don't chew it
to death or swallow one too many bites, I experience the "stuck"
sensation. My family is so in tune with my eating habits they now remind
me to slow down if it appears I am eating too fast. They don't like to see
me miserable and trust me, I am miserable. Basically, the whole purpose of
the surgery is to eat less, eat slowly and chew your food well. All said
& done, the surgery is so worth it and the weight loss far exceeds the
consequences of not paying attention. I have really learned to appreciate
food and it's purpose. When I think back prior to surgery, I don't think I
even tasted food - I enhaled it! Now that I have said all the above and
since I am no doctor, if you do slow down and start sipping your liquids
and you still don't have any relief discuss the problem with your WLS
doctor.

I totally agree with the previous answer. I had the good fortune of having
two or three hic cups when I had consumed enough early on. Listen to your
body!

I too had that in the beginning. I'm now 6 wks out and it does get better.
I agree with the others, eating/drinking too fast increases the discomfort
but it's not all due to that. At just 9 days post op you are still swollen
inside. Hang in there and sip slowly. You just have to give it time to
heal. In a few more weeks you will experience more issues, or as I like to
call it, adventures in eating. Progressiving to thicker liquids, purees and
then soft foods each brings a new set of trials and frustrations but again,
it does get easier and things "smooth" out.

This also happened to me. It is even worse with solid foods. I am almost
6 months post RNY. Whenever I feel like I am getting full (or even before
I feel it) my nose runs, and this is a sure sign I have overeaten.
