Question:
Oral Thrush and Sciatica after surgery?

I am 2 weeks post-op Lap Gastric Sleeve and have lost 18 lbs. However, one week post-op I developed oral thrush and since have had a horrible time drinking my protein shakes - I gag on them. I am wondering if anyone has tried any other kinds of protein like the New Whey Liquid Protein that tastes more like juice and if anyone else is having my problem with the shakes. Also, about 4 days after surgery I started having horrible aching and pain in my right leg. I am having problems sleeping at night. I saw my primary care doctor and was told it should get better over time, but it seems to be getting worse. Any suggestions on how to improve this condition? You have all been so supportive and helpful during my journey - thank you!    — Wendy M. (posted on September 20, 2008)

The leg pain is scary and should be treated immediately, in case of blood clot. I am pre-op and I love the Whey Protein shakes, just watch out for the carb count. It should be ZERO as well as the sugar. Good luck! -- Cherie

I agree with the above. Call your surgeon. You calf pain should be addressed. ASAP. You dont want to risk a peice of a clot breaking loose. That can be lethal. Its a very simple ultrasound on your leg to find out. Im 10 days post op LAP RNY and also having a hardtime with protein shakes. Since my oral intake in getting better I started using Isopure Flavored water. It is a whey protein also though. You can try some flavors at the Vitamin store and Im sure GNC etc. The bottles are 20 oz with 40 gms protein. Good luck and please let us know about your leg. Paula

As far as the New Whey Liquid Protein, I just received single bullets that I purchased off of eBay so I could try them out. I tried the grape flavored one this evening. When I first opened the tube, I knew right away that I was not going to be able to drink it like it is packaged. It smells great and does not have a whey taste, but boy is it sour. It's like eating sour patch kids candy. So, what I did was to pour it into a 16 oz glass, added three ice cubes, two packets of Splenda, filled the glass with water, and stirred it up. This was actually really great to drink this way to drink it. Still a little tart, but palatable and very good to drink. The original liquid in the bullet is the consistency of thick maple syrup and sour tasting. Hope this will help you out. May God bless you with your trials and tribulations

Check with your surgeon about the leg pain. We are at risk for blood clots for up to 3 months post op. They can do an ultrasound of your leg to make sure it's not a clot. As far as protein shakes go, I had thesame problem. I found 3 premade at Wal-mart that work though. Muscle milk has 52 gm protein so you only have to drink half of it at a time since your body can only absorb between 20 and 25 gms at a time. Also Adkins has one with 15 gms and AdvantEdge has 17gms. All 3 brands are at least tolerable for me. I tries all the GNC brands and gag with all now. By the way, I'm 2 months post op and have for the most part retained my "cast iron" stomach. GNC does have 1 kind that is supposed to be unflavored. You can add it to othere mushy things you eat but not much or your ruin your meal. Every little bit helps though!!

Just letting you all know that I did go to Urgent Care - had blood test to see if I had a blood clot - was inconclusive, so they did an ultrasound. It was negative. So, it is sciatica! But I do feel better just knowing for sure. Thanks for all your support!

Everytime I take antibiotics, I get a yeast infection and need to take Diflucan. You also can get Nystatin swish and swallow for the oral thrush. As far as the leg goes, is the pain in the back of your calf or back of your thigh. It could be sciatica, it could be blood clots... please have it checked out with an ultrasound asap. It is a very serious complication and needs evaluation and at least be ruled out. Did your PCP do any tests to rule out DVT? Good luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
