Question:
Having the RNY what to expect?
Once the surgery is over is there much pain? Will your body feel strange? — Toby2 (posted on May 15, 2008)

Yes there is pain, but it is for a few days, then your are home and back to
workin a week with a RNY. After 6 weeks you are eating regular foods but a
healthy diet, so once you adapt to your new diet, live is good and I don't
miss much after 5 months. I would do it all over again. For a first few
weeks, you might ask yourself "What did I do?" but That is short
lived. The compliments are better than all the fast food I have eaten in a
lifetime.
Best fo success to you!

The surgery was definitely NOTHING like the c-section I underwent with my
son. A few days of pain but in the hospital you have a pain pump. I got
sent home with some liquid Loratab and only had to take it the first few
days. It really is only sore when moving from a laying down position to get
back up and twisting. Not unbearable at all though! Best Wishes! Definitely
worth it!

I had minimal discomfort due to the RNY surgery. My Surgeon prescribed
liquid Loratab to use as needed. After the first week, I had no surgical
pain but since I have chronic back pain, I con't the lortab for a month.
I felt fine after the initial discomfort passed and was back at work after
2 weeks. I was a nurse (now retired) but if I had a desk job, I'm sure I
could have been back at work after 1 week.
You can be so happy when you see the pounds melt off your body and will be
a new person.

There is pain...Be glad they rarely do open RNY anymore...I was sore for 6
months and then another 6 months of mild pain. Your body will NEVER feel
the same. Your stomach is an entirely different animal! It is grumpy and
mean and fussy for quite a while (even 4 years later) Treat it right and
it will treat you right! It doesn't like non complex- carbs or sugar one
day...and the next day it let's you get away with a little sugar only to
give you wicked stinky gas....Then one day it likes meat and the next week
you can't touch it. Milk one day...then never again. Somethings you liked
before surgery make you puke after. No...things will never be the same.
But you find that eating healthy feels good...looks good...tastes
good...and after doing it for a while you almost think that if you would
have only commited to eating right before surgery, how easy it might have
been if you just ate healthy and stuck with it. You have to make changes
and RNY forces you to do what you could not do without it. The good
outweighs the little aches and pains...Ask anyone! :)
Good luck

Everyone is different. I woke up from surgery feeling no pain so of course
I thought, wow, the morphine is working. Once up in my room, the nurse
instructed me on using the pump which they kept in for a day and after that
provided me with heavy medication but I didn't need it. The nurse made
extra trips into my room to see if I was in pain but I never was. There
was discomfort when I got up to use the bathroom and or shower and go for
my walks but that's to be expected but no pain. I had my surgery on
Wednesday and went home on Friday. When I got home, I couldn't sleep in my
bed so I slept in a recliner for about a week to two weeks but then as far
as comfort goes, it was easy sailing and I got back in my bed. Like I
said, everyone is different and I'm so glad I didn't have any pain because
I'm a big baby, smile. Hope this helps.

That really depends on the person. Most people say you only have a few days
of pain. I had way more than that and couldn't return to work until after 4
months and couldn't eat my first meal for a very long time. So you have to
know for yourself how your body heals.

Right after surgery, I had more discomfort than what I would consider pain.
I didn't use the morphine (except when the nurse pushed it before tube
removals), and I didn't use any pain medication once home. BUT, everyone
is different - different experience, different pain tolerance.
My body didn't feel strange... just sore and tired. I really felt good for
the most part, but I was easily exhausted!

Yes there is discomfort after the surgery. But I was up and walking late
afternoon that day. In the end any discomfort I had was well worth it.

I didnot have any pain we whatsoever. Although at the hospital they gave me
IV pain meds. I walked 3 hours after surgery and felt pretty good. I never
did use te pain med prescribed to me when I left the hospital. Good Luck!

I had a lap RNY on 05/02/08 ... I was fortunate that I never had any real
pain once the gas from the laparoscopy had worked its way out of my system.
I couldn't sleep on my back, so I was a little sore the first week or so
from sleeping on my side (sleeping on my side didn't hurt, but when I'd
wake up in the morning and stretched onto my back - eek!). They gave me
pain pills but I have never taken them - I tried one the night I came home
from the hospital, but it got stuck and I threw it up ... After that I
didn't try again. I don't think I really needed it that night, anyway - I
think it was still just a residual gas pain from the laparascopy. I think
I've been blessed that everything went as well for me as it did, and I wish
you nothing but the best!
