Question:
HAS ANYONES THROAT EVER SOUND LIKE A CROKER FISH WHEN YOU EAT

I had the lapband last july. I started out at 206 LBS and am at 188 now. I wanted it to come off slow but not this slow. I have had 4 fills with no noticable restriction until the last one in November. The result from the last fill is that I can eat quite a bit of the soft foods like beans & rice etc with no feeling of fullness at all, my pouch doesn't seem to be there. I have to limit myself and use my will power. The tool that helps me from eating is the pain when I eat other things that have to be chewed very well. I know the pain is from the food because it doesn't happen with very soft food. I am eating right and I chew well, if I don't I pay with pain. It feels like it is in my ephosogus and that is when I can hear it trying to go down and noise like a croker fish comes out of my throat. I'm guessing I don't need another fill but I don't feel restriction (fullness) just the pain. Has anyone else had this experience. Thank you all in advance for your help. Mayrose - I had RNY/GB in December and yes, sometimes after I eat, my throat makes that sound. Right this minute my abdomen is making those sounds - loud - and all I ate was a cheese stick about 2 hours ago. It can be embarrassing sometimes, like if it happens when I'm in a business meeting or talking face to face to someone. What do we do? Grin and bear it I guess! Marsha

My doctor told me to eat meat, steak and pork chops. That should fill you up some. Nothing that's mushy only hard things like steak pork chops and meat that takes a while to chew and swallow.

eating rice and beans will not give you the full feeling you are looking for. Meat will definately help you to feel what you are looking for. Meat is often uncomfortable, but this is why we paid for our pouches in the first place, to feel full ASAP. If you continue to eat slider foods or soft food, you have to train yourself to look for the satisfied feeling rather than the full feeling or just straight out measure the food so you don't go over in calories. This is important to get you to your goal. If you look at the diagram of where the band is placed, it can help you understand why when you are full your voice sounds this way. It is very close to the esophogus.

Yes, I get that sound some tomes since my last 2 fills. Air being pushed around the food I think. Try good hambuger or soups w/ tender pieces of meat. You really need to stay away from the slider foods as much as you can tolerate. Is it true pain? Once I took nips of chicken chewed for 3 minutes & still PB the chicken was just too dry. I do warm liquid for breakfast (too tight to eat anything). Soup for lunch, but always has protein and solid for supper. I find the tighter the band the harder it is to eat solid, but that is when it is important to help w/weight loss. Make sure your bites are no bigger that a pencil eraser, chew until you can feel no lumps, and there is plenty of saliva mixed in so it doesn't ball up. Donna, Indiana 68lbs lost in 10 months

Yes, I've had those sounds, but usually when I eat too quickly and get food somewhat "stuck" in my throat. When that happens I usually try to cough it up. I have done very well since my surgery August 6, 2007, but I think it's because I'm rigid about what I eat and drink. I have totally given up alcohol (and I was a pretty heavy drinker--bourbon and wine), I have not eaten any pasta, rice, bread, bagels, since the surgery, and I don't plan to. I try to stay at 1000 to 1200 calories a day, and my one treat a day is a 24 oz Cafe' Vanilla Light Frappuchino at Starbucks--it's 300 calories, but I use that instead of really eating lunch. My other daily intake includes low-calorie granola bars for fiber (South Beach, Quaker low-calorie, Kellogg), light yogurt with cherries, small servings of light fruit cocktail, and lots of salad with no-cal dressing. Also, some grapes, a few almonds, coffee (no cream/sweetner), also low-cal grapefruit juice, and small portion of cheese. I'm not so good about getting in protein, so occasionally I make a large pot of turkey chili so I get the protein from the beans and the turkey. Incidentally I have had no fills at all, since my doctor is pleased with my progress and I keep losing, although now it's much, much slower. I've gone from about 297 to 214 since August 2007. If I can share any more information, let me know. I'm so glad I underwent this surgery.

Hi Mayrose, In my nutrition class, we were told that we cannot eat rice or pasta because it swells up in the pouch. It could lead to problems with your esophagus if food is backing up. I agree with the other comments that meat will stay with you longer than those carbs. Good luck with everything. Regina
