Question:
Are you' all sure?
When I read that someone is 12 months out from surgery and eating only 600 to 800 calories a day it amazes me. Are you sure that is all? Are you counting everything you put in your mouth? Are you counting protien drinks etc? I am only 8 weeks out and track on fitday.com. I average 1200 to 1500 a day. Losing about 2 pounds a week. — Tawnda C. (posted on March 2, 2008)

You are in the safe zone eating 1200 - 1500 per day. On a diet I eat 1200,
that's the minimum. 600-800 is sooo unsafe.

I wish I could get in that much, I do good to get in 800 a day, I only lose
about 1 lb a week. Sometimes I wonder how long I can go on this way. I am
ten weeks out, and really try to increase the amounts I take in. Are alot
of your calories fluid? Good luck Lesleigh

hi there- i will be 4 yrs post op on the 24th, and it wasnt until I was 3
yrs out that i was supposed to start trying to take in 1000-1200 cal a day-
I can still only manage about 800 which is what my body requires. Between
700 and 900 cal up to year 3 is what we were advised, and it is what has
kept the majority of us here ( meaning those of us who had the same
surgeon, nutritionists etc ) keeping our weight off this far out. Its all
decided by your surgeon and nutritionist. There is NO way I can eat that
much even now. I envy those of you who can. Cindi 3.24.04 - 230# and

Hi. I am only 4 weeks out; but in the book my surgeons office gave me; it
does indicate that at 12 months you're only consuming 800-900 cals per day.
Right now I'm at about 500 and I have to push to get that in. ARe you
following any program from the surgeon or NUT? 1200-1500 seems like an
aweful lot; but I'm no doc and only following what my doc says and I know
you have to do the same since each is different.

normal range for calorie intake on your regular diet is;
800-1200 cal. this is the last stage of the diet progression.
contine 6-8 cups of water. Everyone will progress differently. i too can
even phatom 800 cal. but i am doing better with fluids.
I wish you Luck.

My surgeon says that after surgery you should never again eat more than
1000 calories in a day. I average about 500-600 (at about 11 weeks out). I
am satisfied and losing. I have lost 80 lbs already.

I think everyone's surgeon/nutritionist gives them different advice. I am
five months out and I am eating about 1000-1200 calories per day. I'm
right on track according to my nutritionist and I'm down 63 lbs. - Shannon

Hi...I'm 4 years out and have been tracking every single thing I put in my
mouth for over two weeks now (just out of curiousity) Because I just
couldn't believe how little some people eat and I felt like I was eating
too much compared.
First of all...I'm not a light weight. I weigh 165 lbs and wear a size 8. I
maintained my weight for four years since surgery (3 After the initail
loss). I eat between 800-1500 depending on what I decided to eat and it's
fat content. I don't particularly watch my fat intake. So my calories do
vary as does my food choices. I'm not consistant at all. A lot depends on
what meats I am eating. Fish ahs so many less calories and fat whereas beef
has a ton more fat and calories. Many new Post Ops can't handle beef right
away. I'll go an entire week at only 1000 calories and then a week of
1300-1500...I like a variety in my menu. I don't go over but rarely.
I also don't think people really know what they are eating for certain
unless they track it like you on Fitday or sparkle or manually like I do. I
weight everything and write everything down so I can figure the calories
daily.

I asked my sergeon why I can only get in 600 to 800 calories a day, and he
said that he makes his pouches smaller than most and he has a stricter
limites in the first 6 months as to what he wants us to eat. I know that I
never exceed 800 Calories, as I chart everything 75% of my calories are
from Protien and the redst from Fruit and vegies. I can't complain because
I lost 66 pounds in the first three months. If we go out to eat, I never
order, but have my wife just order what I can eat and I eat a few bits from
her plate. I could not eat more than 4 oz in a meal if I tried.

I am only 6 months post, but I can believe that 600-800 calories is all for
some. I struggle to get 600 calories in. Just getting my protien in is a
great deal of work. Sometimes I feel like I spend my day just pushing
things in my mouth (supplement drinks, water and protein), but it never
amounts to more than about 400-500 calories. My doctor says that is normal,
and that I am doing great. My blood is checked religiously and I take my
vitamins like I am told. It is just a delicate balance. Actual protein from
health sources has very little calories and adding fresh fruit and
vegetables amount to the same small amount of calories as my pouch is very
small. Every person is different, and if you are losing and able to intake
that amount of food, then I am glad for you. You will do well. Just never
forget your vitamins and supplements, as that is where people run into
problems. Avitaminosis is the most common problem for post surg, which is a
lack of vitamins. Thank you for mentioning fitday, as I will check it out.

Hello! For the first 6-8 months after lap rny I would consume about
500-700 calories/day. I am now 18 months out and have about 800-1100/day.
I am at goal weight - lost 200 pounds weigh 145 pounds and have a BMI of 22
down from 53. Lost 185 pounds in the first year. I would find it
incredible to be able to have 1200-1500 calories/day at 8 weeks out. I
couldn't consume anywhere close to that amount. Yes - I do track my
calories - blood levels are all in balance. I also eat 75% protein -
balance fruit/veggies.
