Question:
I lost only 5lb in one month, it is normal?

This is my fourth month post-operation and I had lost so far 64lb. Really great job but on the fourth month I only lost 5lb and start loosing lot of hair. Why I stop loosing that drastically.    — reborning (posted on February 21, 2008)

Hey Celia, First of off -- congratulations on the weight loss. The weight loss will slow down from time to time in order for the rest of your body to adjust --so don't panic. You are doing great! That's about where I am now at about 5 lbs. a month. I just keep doing what I'm doing. It will kick in again -- don't worry.

You're doing great....and I can certainly relate to the decline in pounds off. I'm also 4 months post-op and haven't been losing like I did before. I'm down a total of 60 since surgery and just started noticing more hair loss as well. Plus my skin on my face isn't looking as healthy. I'm really trying to boost my protein, taking biotin supplements, (along with the other things we're suppose to take) and drinking lots of liquids. (water) I hate now that I'm able to consume more variety of foods....even though I wanted to...now I'm going through this fear factor of thinking I'll sabotage if I eat too much. So I'm really concentrating on nutrients, calories, and portions. A good reliable source for me here...was another member that is 4 years out and maintaining well. She stated that your body loses so quickly in the beginning, then it fights for it's survival basically. So things slow a bit....but once it gets back to adjusting to it's new size, the pounds will come off...but slower. Take this time..as I have....to really focus on getting the right amount of protein, and what I mentioned before..about portions....liquids, etc. and focus more on getting fitter....more toned. Losing weight so quickly does a number on your skin. So I'm really trying to tone up that loose stuff...and figure that the end result will be more weight or inches lost...along with a more svelt figure. Good luck and lots of well wishes.... hugs Cheryl

Congrad's on the great job so far. You need to get 75-85 grams of protein per day and that will help the hair loss slow down and help you feel better. Also check your B-12 levels through a blood test. As to the weight slowing down, don't worry and just stick to your diet and it will start up again. I stalled for 20 days and then it started up, but keep excersize and the diet as your focal point and you will do just fine.

The slow down in weight loss is very normal. As far as losing your hair, you haven't been getting in the minimum amount of protein each and every single day-- 70 grams. Even if you miss not getting that amount for 1 day, you have already done harm to your hair. No amount of anything will help or reverse that. Now what you can do to get your hair to grow back in quickly is to take Biotin. Above the "reccomended" dosage. Some say it doesn't help, however it DOES help with some people. It certainly has for me. I had super thick hair before surgery and it has thinned out quite a bit, but the regrowth has been coming in fast w/me taking the Biotin. Keep up the great weight loss, good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side!

Every month will be a different weight loss, some months it will fall off and others you'll have to really work for it. Appreciate the times you have to work for it and make that a solid habit. We can definately get spoiled on those fall off months. Just imagine that you are 64lbs closer to your goal than you were 4 months ago and without those 5lbs, it would only be 59!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

Please do not be discouraged. This is part of the journey. I am 11 months out and down 115 lbs. I went weeks with no loss and wondered what was wrong with me then all of a sudden 8 pounds down. It is the journey of a lifetime and if you start thinking in the old way you will sabotage the journey. Keep positive and stay connected to the great people on this site. Best of luck

I too have had a one or two minor little or no weight loss from one week to the next. I am in my 7th month now and my weight loss has slowed somewhat. But I notice that I'm still lossing around the waist and torso, so maybe it's being redistributed due to my 1hr/3x weekly YMCA Treadmill (1 mile) & weights lifting (40 min also 3x weekly). I went from 54"waist to 46" since Aug 7th 2007. As for hair loss my doc and bariatric dietician staff told me to be sure to take as much protein prescribed. So in addition to the recommended protein for each meal I do supplement my intake with apporved protein bars (EAS) and at least 3 Tbls of Soy Protein (both from Walmart) daily. So far no hair loss that I've noticed. So hang in there and follow your bariatrics team (including your fellow patients) Rx and advise. And as said in previous replies we all loose the pounds at our own rate.
