Question:
18 days 'til RNY and I'm overwhelmed!

What should I buy? Protein powder? Baby food? I've been using Atkins Advantage shakes for weight loss. Can I continue using them after surgery? Can I add protein powder to them?    — digotz (posted on December 22, 2007)

Getting the most protein you can is the key. If Atkins has enough or you can add protein to it, then I don't see why not. I had my surgery the 12th and have found it hard to stomach almost everything recommended, except the protein shakes. Chocolate Truffle Nectar, is very good.

I think you should check with your team. Doctors vary widely in what they recommend post-op, but I would find a protein supplement that you find palatable. GNC has something called Designer Whey which comes in a bunch of flavors. Baby food probably won't be necessary, but some people do use it when transitioning to puree food. Your tastes are also going to change after the surgery, so don't be surprised if what you like now isn't what you will like then. ~Shirley

If you've gone to a support meeting or two, they normally have some samples of different products. Possibly the health food store, etc. that has these drinks may have some sample sizes. Normally though, the shake powders come in larger bottles. Try to taste a sample before you buy too much. Also remember, your taste for some flavors may be different after surgery.

I was told that baby food for the most part is high in sugar. You are going to need your protein drink ( I like Muscle Milk Light in Chocolate milk flavor, it isn't gritty ) your vitamins and your calcuim with D. You will be on a sf liquid diet more than likely and so get your sf puddings and jello too. Good luck and I hope your recovery is a fast on.

Do not buy baby food you will not need it!! Take in a lot of liquid soups...Tomatoe, cream soups(strained), broths etc. It is not as bad as it seems.

If you continue taking the Atkins Advantage, you should be able to add the AnyWhey tasteless protein powder to it with no problems. It can be bought at GNC. Remember, the best protein our bodies absorb is WHEY. The protein bullets, and some of the protein powders don't use WHEY protein. Good luck and God Bless!

I add protein powder to Atkins and/or Slimfast all the time. I put them in the freezer and get them really slushy and open the can from the bottom and add protein powder and stir. I use the vanilla flavor EAS Whey protein from Sam's Club just because I had that on hand. Good luck to you.

I recommend beneprotien powder mixed with water and crystal light. Also jello, popsicles, cream of wheat, clear chicken broth. Don't go overboard because your diet will change every two weeks while you work your way up to regular food. Good Luck I hope you do great. I have lost 91 lbs and 12 inches off my in 5 months. You will love the change. I also was taking 6-8 shots of insulin a day. Now I'm completly off all my diabetic meds.

Diane...I know things r overwhelming for you right now. It's the beginning of this wild advenuture and you want to be prepared and ready to anything and everything. I hear you. I was the same way. I would keep drinking what you are drinking as long as they are low in fat and sugar. The best protein to buy is the one you are going to use/drink. Otherwise, what is the point. Everyone is different and likes different things, textures, etc. and keep in mind you tastebuds can and will change after surgery - not saying you won't like the Atkins after surgery, but there is a possiblity, so don't buy 12 cases - just in case. I would buy the vitamins and supplements you are going 2 need. I would stock up on SF pudding and yogart and popsciles - they were my saving grace. I would buy small "salsa cups" in 1 oz and 2 oz sizes to help you measure when you get home from the hospital, it helped me to determine how much I was eating/drinking. You can get them at smart and final or any warehouse type store when they cater to restuarants as well as the general public. you will feel overwhelmed. you will run the full battery of emotions: from happy, to sad, to overhwelmed, to depressed to glad to mad to doubtful to .... it all. It is normal and you will be fine. OH...you can add protein powder to anything that you like and will eat. Again, the best protein is the one you will eat and continue to eat and like and tolerate. LOL. Good luck.

Right after surgery I drank whey protien which was nasty then switched to a vegetable protein from Arbonne (www.golong.myarbonne.com). You can mix it with fat free milk and it gives 27 grams of protein. It is really good; my kids even drink them. I am 3 months out and have been mixing them with frozen fruit. I actually look forward to drinking them. I bought a Magic Bullet to blend it and puree; I highly recommend that. I never did baby food. I did soups, sugar free carnation instant breakfast mix, sugar free hot choc mix and crystal light drink mixes. Good luck; it is the best thing I have done for myself. 3 months and 54 pounds later... kristie
