Question:
RNY Surgery on 7/18, have plateaud at 27 lbs for three weeks, is this common?
I had Gastric bypass on 7/18, and have only lost 27lbs so far. I have been stuck at 27lbs for almost three weeks and it is very frustrating. I am exercising, and eating less than 300 calories a day. I do not eat anything with sugar, mainly chicken and fish and vegetables. I try to get in as much protien as I can, but am still not losing anything. I have lost 38 inches. Is this normal? — mtrmthxx (posted on September 9, 2007)

It is normal to hit a weight plataue but you need to just ride them out,
follow the dietary guidelines set up for you. 300 calories is not enough
and your body thinks it is starving and is retaining the fat for
protection. You need to eat all your reccomended small meals a day. Besides
this weight loss is over a pound a day plus all the inches, yes you are on
the right track so do not try to hurry the plataue by starving. The fact
that you are also exercising slows the weight loss when you are only taking
in that many calories a day, you are going to make yourself sick.I would
hope that no one told you to only eat 300 calories a day. Ask the Dr what
would be a good caloric intake per day for you. I panicked at my first
weight plataue and it lasted a good 2 weeks and then woossh down I went
again and I did not cut my meals, your body just readjusts, looses inches
and dress sizes and then starts again.

I am not sure if it is normal so early. I had mine on May 22. I have lost
52 pounds and I had one week where I did not loss anything but we were on
vacation and I was out of my routine. I am sure yolu will continue to loss
just stick with your routine.

Mine was on 7/20 and I have lost about 32 lbs. You need to get your
calories up to about 800 at this point. I bet if you give your system
something to burn you will start to lose. Christine

i have not had my surgery yet, so i'm not speaking from personal
experience, but i have many friends that have had gastric bypass and it
sounds to me like you need more calories! like the post before me said your
body goes into starvation mode and holds on to what you are eating instead
of burning the calories. may i make one more suggestion: don't weigh every
day or even every week. try to only weigh like once a month or if you must
maybe every other week. that keeps your mind focused on other things
instead of just the numbers, ya know? i hope this helps and i'm sure your
wt loss will jump start again real soon..... Holly

first of all...............300 calories? You should be no lower then 600
and actually right around 800. Your metabolism has shut itself down. You
have to eat calories to burn calories. You can't just go into the negative.
If you are working out like you say you are you are building all muscle and
it weighs more then fat. Increase your protein and vegetables. You can do
the very low fat shakes imbetween meals. Good luck

Hey Honey... I am 7 months out this Saturday. You are not eating enough
calories. Basically, your body thinks it's still starving. You are at like
2 months or just shy.... I was eating 3-4 oz per meal (3 meals a day) and
1-2 healthy snacks (baby carrots, cheese stick) keeping my protein to a
minimum of 50grams a day, but normally getting on average around 65-70grams
per day. A minimum of a liter of fluids a day. Take all of your vitamins.
You are not getting enough calories in and you are exercising and not
having anything to burn. Inch loss is great, too, but it's nice to see the
scale move. I think if you get more calories in - it will help and you will
see the scale start to move in a bit. Worried about too many calories. I
eat the Balance protein bars (100 calorie) version - the peanut butter ones
are AWESOME. You can eat three of these in a day (for snacks between meals)
and add to your calories and add to your protein. Good luck..
