Question:
Can u have lap-Band Surgery, 5 yrs after Gastric Bypass.

Is it possible to have lap-band surgery. People who have had the Gastric-Bypass have put some weight back on. I would like to know is it possible now to have the lap-band. Robin    — robine4 (posted on April 27, 2007)

I guess it would depend upon why you put the weight back on. No amount of physical things being done to you are going to "fix" your weight loss problem without fixing the head issues first. I think that is what a surgeon is going to look at. RNY is so much more invasive and restrictive plus malabsorptive and now you are asking about a strictrly restrictive method.. .. ask yourself why you gained the weight back to begin with. If you address those issues, you may not have to have another surgery... just some food for thought... pardon the pun...

I'm pretty sure you can have the surgery; however, finding a surgeon who would do it or even getting your insurnce to cover the procedure may be difficult.

Hi Robin, thanks for writing. I never though much about this question before, but I would say that you need to talk to your surgeon. My problem is what would they band? Your stomach is so small now, I don't think there is enough to get around. After a few years post rny, it is diet and exercise, just like the rest of the world. You have to put all those good things into practice for the rest of your life Robin to make your surgery work. They do some revisions I know, but the risk is so much higher when they do. I encourage you to look at your diet. Do you drink pop, caffine? What does your diet look like, are you practicing good things or still have too many bad habits? What is your exercise, and what is your water intake? Go back to basics of protein, water and exercise. You still have a tool, you just have to use your brain to activate it and use it for maximum benefit. I wish you well, and hope you get motivated to move forward for your own health. You didn't go through surgery to go backwards, so I hope you move forward for your own sake. Obesity is a head issue with a body consequence. The great news is that you can choose to win. It will be a fight for sure, but you can choose to win. Take care, Patricia P.

YES, it is possible as my Surgeon suggested this from my first Consultation. Due to my Morbidly Obese size. I wanted and received the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and have done wonderfully but if after a year or two if I have not accomplished reaching my Goal. He will re-enter my body and place a Laproscopic Banding around my New Pouch. Which I know I've already stretched out a little more than what he made me from my surgery date a year ago. But so far it's been totally a Mind over Matter adjustment making decissions.

Hi Robin. I had RNY in 1994, regained a lot of weight back, underwent lap band over the RNY in 1/06, have had tremendous success with it. Check out my profile for my story and feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I highly recommend the "band over bypass."
