Question:
Huge Loss First Week........Small Gain the Second

I WLS exactly two weeks ago today and am only weighing myself once a week. The first week I dropped 21 pounds, so I went today to weigh and was floored to see that I had gained 3 pounds. I would have been happy with just a loss of a pound but was not prepared for a gain at two weeks out? Is this normal? So soon? I have never posted a question on here before. Please help.    — onmywaytothin (posted on April 24, 2007)

I am little over three months. believe me...i know how you feel. i started weighing myself every week too. one week i weighed and i was up two pounds so of course i was suicidal (lol) so i decided that the scale was not my friend. it never has been so my advice is DON'T WEIGH YOURSELF! just have your checkups with the doc.

I know its hard, but try to weigh in only once a month. Sometimes you may gain water weight and that can cause 3lb gain. You will drive yourself crazy if you weight in every week, belive me I know. When I use to weigh in once a week if there was a week I didnt lose, I would get upset. Also try to weigh in the same time as the last time. I always weight first thing in the morning before I eat and put clothes on. Good Luck!

I go up and down as well. I weigh every Sunday night. I don't let it freak me out....it's only a number! I really weigh myself to make sure I am not gaining like 10lbs in one week - which I know I am not, but it's a sanity check. I am 2 months 1 week out. When I start my period, I gain a few lbs. but then drop. Sometimes something I eat makes me very gassy and I will gain a few - but in the end, it all comes off and then some. Don't get discourgaed. It is part of the adventure. Remember, it's only a number. Check you weight for drastic changes (gain). Keep doing what you are doing - 21lbs in two weeks is awesome. Welcome to the losers bench. :)

What Jammie said. I let my clothes tell me how much I have lost and in 2 months and days I've dropped two pant sizes (down to a 24) and am now on the other side of 250 lbs. I weighed myself at work one day at saw a 2 lb weight gain and didn't weigh myself for almost two weeks. I weighed the other day and weighed in at 248 size 24 -- so now I see I'm going to have a hard time finding size 24 slacks.

Hello, I also dropped quite a bit the first week or two. Then I plateaued and gained one or two pounds. My doctor said that is perfectly normal. I am now losing again but not as rapidly which is what is suppose to happen. I weigh everyday. I am addicted to the scale now.

Hi Mandy. Your profile doesn't say anything, so I don't know your story at all, but it doesn't surprise me that your body jumped up 3 pounds after such a big week! Don't take it personally, it is just a body adjustment. I lost 11 lbs the first week and felt great, 21 lbs is just huge Mandy, and you have to understand that even though your body is losing weight, it is still a very vital unit of organs and muscles. To lose too quickly all the time is very dangerous. I know you would be happy with just a pound, and I am thankful for your attitude about that, but just know that your body needs time to adjust. Just drink your stuff and stick with the program. Each body is different, so let your body know you support it. Take care, and update your profile! Patricia P.

I don't have an answer, just a thought.... I'm still Pre-Op so I have not been through it YET .... but my thoughts are.... the first two weeks you are mostly on liquids, right? Then week three you start to incorporate soft foods? I would think that it might have something to do with that..... and from what I've read... be sure you get your H2O in ya! :) GOOD LUCK and keep us posted on your progress.

I believed that the weight gain only happened to me. I was sure that I was going to be the first lap-band failure. I'm so glad that I found this Q&A. Now I realize I'm not alone, I'm not the only one this happened to. I gained 5 pounds the first week of Phase II (mushy foods). I've lost it the second week but was just so depressed I felt like giving up. I've also decided that I'm weighing myself once a week --- not everyday anymore. I'm so glad I found this site!!!

Hey... I was told by my surgeon not to weight myself daily because you can fluctuate up to 5 lbs daily due to fluid fluctuation. I know you say that you only do this once weekly, but you had a huge wt loss at first, and you probably hit the upswing on the fluctuation. You will sabotage yourself by relying on the scale for your success. Instead focus on you protein, water, vitamin/mineral intake, exercise and the rest will happen. Pay more attention to how much more you are able to do and what clothes that you can now wear. good luck to you and congrats on your success and here's to your continued success.
