What is everyone doing for exercise
What is everyone doing for exercise and how can I get motivated? — missyheffelfinger (posted on April 7, 2007)

I actually got out the habit, but the owner of my gym started hounding me
to come back. I tried to get out of it, 'cause of my knee pain, but he
pushed enough to get me back to using the eliptical (which is lower impact
than the treadmill) a couple of time a week. It's only been a few weeks,
but having the owner of gym personally call me definetly got me motivated
to get my butt back in the gym regularly.

I was doing cardio workout (treadmill, bicycle, rowing machine) while in
Florida at the YMCA. Since returning home I do aquaarobics in the water.
I have to say that walking is the best way to loose the weight but it can
be boring and that is why I became a member of the Y. That way you never
get bored with your exercise.

Don't make excuses, just do a little as early in the day as you can, it
doesn't matter much what or how little, just do it every day and
congratulate yourself for what you do, and don't waste a second on guilty
thoughts. After a very few weeks you are very likely to look forward to
exercise and want to do more.

Missy... It is whatever you are going to stick with... try a variety of
things... just get moving... don't use the excuse that you don't know what
to do. You know how to walk, so get out there and walk... If there is a
pool closeby, like the YM/WCA or the local highschool for adult ed, etc
they usually hold water aerobics - you don't need to know how to swim to do
those. If you do know how to swim.. then go do laps ... you can swim or
use a kickboard. You can go to any of the dept stores and they have
exercise tapes. If you don't want to spend the money right away on a tape,
then go to the library.. they will loan them to you for free.. find one you
like and then buy it... it doesn't matter what you do, but you need to do
something to get into the habit of exercising and to keep your metabolism
up... good luck...

Missy,
If you haven't worked out in awhile -- start walking. Usually the high
school close to you with a track -- start walking -- 4 times around is a
mile. Work your way to the stationary bike -- work up to 30 minutes. Go
to www.self.com and sign up for the self challenge. They have videos of
various exercises that you can perform on a daily basis.
When I was two weeks out (as weather permitted) I was walking or hitting
the stationary bike. Almost 7 weeks out I'm up to 30 minutes 3/4 days a
week on the stationary bike and strengthing exercises. Also when you join
the self challenge you get a free two weeks at your local Gold Gym --they
are participating in the challenge as well and your free time maybe more
than 2 weeks. I also do some strength training with my cardio -- arms and
cardion one day and legs and cardio the next. When I started I was just 2
weeks out and would get tired and if I worked out 2 days in a row I'd have
to rest of two days. So for awhile I went back to just riding the bike and
worked my way back.
One thing that motivates me -- I made this decision to have the surgery and
lose weight and become a healtheir person. I will not let myself down.
This promise I will keep to myself.

Hi Missy, welcome to the losing side. First of all, on your left side of
your chest, this should be talked about with your surgeon. I would assume
though that they will say because of the pumping of gas in your chest
cavity for the surgery that that will produce all kinds of discomfort as it
disapates. Even though it has been about 4 weeks, you could still be
uncomfortable. This is huge surgery. Regarding exercise. I began walking
2 miles a day two weeks past surgery, and in 4 months was walking 5 miles a
day. I divided it into two times a day 2 1/2 miles twice a day around the
neighborhood. Motivation? What did you have surgery for? That is your
motivation. Don't go backwards. You have about 6 months of great weight
loss ahead of you if you are smart and get up and walk or something. If
you choose to stay seated, you will lose less, feel like crap and regret
your surgery. You had surgery to fight for your health, so get up and
fight for it! You will be glad you did. Take care, Patricia P.

I joined Curves back in Sept, prior to my sugery in March. I lost 13 pounds
just working out at Curves. It's only 30 minutes, but you're getting an
hours and a half working (that's what I was told by a Curves employee).
It's fun, fat and very fast pace. It's the only thing that has ever held my
interest. Treadmills and stationary bikes are just so boring to me! Most of
the women that go to curves are quit a bit over weight so I'm not
embarassed to work out there. Check it out!

HI-- I too go to Curves-- LOVE it... Right now they are running a special 2
for 1 (or 1/2 price for 1 person) it is a quick workout-- and a true
workout at that-- can be as hard or easy as you make it... I go with my
aunt and it makes it go so much quicker-- seriously find a friend and go
together-- another nice thing is-- as a member you can go to any Curves in
the WORLD-- so you can go when you are on vacation (yea right :-)) too.
Good Luck

I go line dancing twice a week. It's a 2 hour class and my friend wore her
pedometer one night and we danced 3 1/2 miles. It's a lot of fun and great
exercise. The other thing I like to do is turn the music on at home and
clean the house vigerously or dance in my kitchen. My 16 month old thinks
it's great lol.
