Question:
has anyone had ulcers since rny? I started smoking again due
to personal stress. Has anyone developed ulcers and what has to be done to fix them — pattipooh59 (posted on January 9, 2007)

I answered a question about pain up above. It is an ulcer. There is nothing
that can be done to fix mine unless it begins to bleed. For now, Im taking
prilosec. Give it a try. It has worked for me and the pain is gone. I too
am a smoker and I know it only aggravates the ulcer. Good luck.

I've had ulcers for years before and constantly since my RNY in 03. They
just give me more PPI (Nexium, prilosec, prevacid, pepcid, etc) and tell
me to avoid eating the foods that aggravate my stomach. Good luck

Pat, I am almost 3 years out, and developed gastric ulcers about 6 months
after surgery. They put me on protonix for the ulcer, and it works
excellently, and I am glad for it. Do youself a favor and quit smoking.
You did it once, do it again. It does more damage that before you had
surgery. I am sure you know there isn't one good thing about smoking, so I
won't go there, but I really encourage you to do whatever you need to to
quit. There is medication available now through your doctor to help quit,
there is gum, patches, classes, etc. It all stinks to have to do this, I
know, but you have come so far with your surgery to get your body back,
don't destroy your health by stepping backwards. I know you can't read my
"emotion" in writing, but I am pleading with you, not trying to
be rude. There has to be another option to going backwards with smoking.
I beg you to find it. Best to you. Patricia P

Marginal ulcers are (sadly) very common among us. The ulcer forms in the
intestine where it meets the pouch, hence "marginal". Smoking
decreases blood flow, so it can make that tender lil area more
"brittle" and subject to ulceration. My personal fave is
Prilosec over any of the other PPI's, but each person has "the one
that works". The other thing you might ask for is Carafate
(sucralfate), which does an excellent job of soothing and healing, much
like balm on a booboo. It's rx, but it's an older drug, so most docs don't
think of it right off.
