Question:
protein

Will the procedure not be as effective if you don't get in the protein?? I am almost three weeks out. Dying for real food and don't like the protein shakes. My dr says no starches for 6 months and i'm supossed to be on full liquids still. Has anyone else had to do that ?????????????    — brianne (posted on October 28, 2006)

The best thing I can tell you is to get you some ANY WHEY. This stuff has been my saving grace. I have had a horrid time getting in my protein since if I can even taste the slightest hint of protein in a shake or bar it makes me ill. ANY WHEY literally is tasteless and you can put it in anything. I put it in my coffee, apple cider, anything I can think of. It' s17 grams of protein per scoop. You can order it online or if you have a Vitamin Shoppe near you, try there. They didn't carry it at ours till a girl in my support group made a special order for it now they do carry it. I LOVE It ... can ya tell lol . Good luck I promise things get better.

The direct answer is: no. You may lose the wt, but a lot of it will be muscle and what you want gone is fatty tissue. You want to keep muscle and bone! What have you tried in protein and how did you make it up? There are, literally, hundreds of products on the market. Eventually, you WILL find true love with one or more products. Even if my protein levels suddenly shot thru the roof and I didn't "have" to use protein shakes, I am fully addicted to the ones I like. Not a good idea to stand between a woman and her protein!

You need the protein to be healthy. My Dr keeps us on protein only, til we have lost 75% of our weight. Every Doctor has their own protocol. Hang in there. The full liquids will be over soon.......Lorelei

I have my RNY scheduled for 11/9 but I do like whey and have enjoyed many shakes made from it. I just ordered the unflavored from www.allthewhey.com. It's comparable to isopure and has 25 grams per scoop! If you put the coupon code matt05 you will get a 5% discount. I also suggest getting the nectars by syntrax...many people swear by them. they are available at www.vitacost.com for about $22. you can put the protein powder in milk, yogurt, hot cereal, sf pudding, even jello! I know of someone who puts the chocolate protein in hood chocolate carb control milk! I don't think you will start eating real food for about 6 weeks. You must try the protein or you will not lose quickly and you will have hair loss! Please talk to your nutritionist if you are having trouble with the protein. good luck.

You must get in your protein as everyone else has told you. If your doctor will allow you to try to eat non-fat cottage cheese instead of the shakes that might work for you but it is imperative that you get in as much protein as you possibly can. I was using the no-sugar added carnation instant breakfast "vanilla" & added some instant decaf coffee to it or General Mills puts out no-sugar coffees too. Try the "Mocha" as it's very tasty....add a spoon full or a little more to your protein shakes & some ice in a blender & you will see that it will taste much better. I too didn't care for the protein shakes on their own so this is a much better way. Phyllis

Protein is very important. Go to bariatriceating.com and order some samples to try. I use Matrix 5.0 chocolate, Nectar Strawberry-Kiwi and mix with Crytal Light about 16 oz with water and Nectar Fuzzy Naval with CL Orangeabout 16 oz of water and I use Any Whey in different Teas.

My surgeon told me I had to be on liquids and protein drinks ONLY for 4 weeks after surgery. Then he started me on soft foods and gradually I was allowed regular foods as I was learning WHAT my stomach could handle and WHAT it can't! I'm going on 4 months post op and I'm still learning! I've also lost 80lbs. since the day, two weeks before my surgery, that my surgeon put me on a liquid diet! My body seems to show weight loss every 3 to 4 weeks, 11lbs. at a time...like you've been told, everyone's body is different. I drink a variety of Whey shakes, at least two, a day...My advice is to just do what your surgeon asks! They're the experts!!!

I disagree with the person who claims whey is tasteless! I HATE the taste of protein shakes, but you just have to suck it up and drink them! The protein keeps your body from losing its lean mass muscle tissue! Muscle tissue is better at burning weight off, and you do not want to lose it. If you can get protein in another way, okay, but you can't! I am almost two years out, and I still need to take the protein shakes (yuck!)

Thank you everyone. I am still trying. Just ordered my hanks samples online. Hoping that is the answer. In the meantime i am pretty proteinless. Can't stand to gag on it so i don't drink it. I must have stronger taste buds then everyone else b/c i CAN taste the nasty stuff. B in Baltimore

I am still pre-op but am testing out different proteins. I have found that one made by GNC is yummy! its the GNC Pro Performance 100% whey protein. It has 20 grams protein and 2g of sugar per scoop and comes in Orange Cream (YUMMY!), vanilla, strawberry cream and chocolate flavors. GNC also offers a buy one get one at half price on their brand! Best wishes for continued success. I can't wait for my journey to really begin!
