Question:
I ate a small piece of steak
I am on the liquid diet for surgery tomorrow and I screwed and ate a small piece of beef steak. Will this cancel my surgery — Gaynelle Sihto (posted on January 25, 2006)

It won't cancel your surgery but if your surgeon is like mine the purpose
of the liquid diet is to 1) make sure that he has a clean area to work with
and 2) If the procedure is going to be laproscopically, it shrinks the
liver giving the surgeon more room to work with. My question to you is why
would you make such a decision so close to your surgery? It is like you are
sabotaging yourself before you can get started. You can not make mistakes
like that post-op since it can be a matter of life and death at that point.
I apologize if my comment seems harsh but you truly need to take things
seriously at this point.

I would imagine the bowel prep will empty you out and if you aren't having
to do it, maybe you should! Magnesium citrate will empty you out. I know
some surgeons don't require it, but I don't really understand why,
especially since your intestines will be severed and a clean and empty
intestinal tract seems like a good thing to me! I have to question your
judgement on this and wonder if maybe you really aren't prepared to go
through with it. If not, speak up now ........after the surgery is done,
there is no going back!
Self discipline is paramount afterwards. Good luck and whatever you do, be
honest with yourself about this major change in your life.

No; but under NO circumstances should you drink/eat after midnight - if you
do they WILL pospone your surgery. If you eat/drink after midnight this
could cause you to throw up during surgery (if you didnt tell them) and
die.

It probally depends on how small is "small". I think you should
tell your surgeon. If he expects you will be "cleaned out" and
you are not, perhaps it would'nt be safe. I too wonder if you can be
compliant post op. I don't mean to be harsh, but you are making this
harder for your surgeon and perhaps less safe for yourself. I don't
understand why, now that your sugery time is so near. I had a chance to go
out for a huge meal the day before my surgery. All paid by someone else. I
wanted it so bad but I had to fast... doctors orders. I knew he had my best
interests in mind. What if he does the surgery, cuts you thinking you are
cleaned out and.... well. I'm sure you probally can guess. Do as you will,
but if it was me getting on the table tomarrow, I'll tell my surgeon what
I'd done. Only because it "could" be a problem for "both of
you". Hope all works well for you. We are all only human of course.

DOES ANYONE know if she survived the game of RUSSIAN ROULLETTE SHE PLAYED
WITH HER LIFE?
the point I hope to stress is that you failed to take a very serious
instruction to heart and put your self at risk for infection and
complication by having a unnecessarily foreign matter in your intestines
during surgery. Apart from the harm to you self, consider your love ones,
and the medical staff that do care about your successful out come.
