Question:
I'm 3 years post op and i'm wondering how much people are

truely eating. There are days i can eat like a horse, and i honeslty have no idea how much it is ounce wise. And entire 6 inch subway sub and perhaps a few chips (This is NOT an every day or even every week occurance...but i'm trying ot think of quanities in forms most people can relate too). Is this too much? I"m just trying to guage what I am eating to what other peole are amount wise. I'm not talking calories or anythign like that beucsae I always stay in the 1200-1500 range, but quantitiy. Thanks :-)    — hdziema (posted on December 19, 2005)

I will be 3yrs in Feb 06, I can't eat a lot at a sitting, maybe an egg w/ cheese and a piece of bacon for breakfast, but I do notice that I am hungry after 3-4 hours. I try to have small meals, say cottage cheese w/ 3-4 whole grain crackers, or some tuna w/ crackers. The whole grain crackers stay w/ me longer than chips or regular bread. I try to do protein first. I do notice I don't eat many veggies. I try to have salads, but I get too full even after just a few bites. I still don't drink w/ meals and find that too be very helpful. I continue to play w/ the same 5-10 lbs, which makes me crazy. However, to be honest.............exercise is the 1st thing I let slide on a regular basis! If I were to try to eat a 6 inch sub, I could never finish, the bread alone would fill me up. We each need to find what works for US, it is trial and error after all.

I am 2.5 years post op, and I feel the same as you, some days I feel like I can not get full and other days I can hardly eat anything. I still stay away from carbs as much as I can, it seems like they make me more hungry in a shorter time. If I had a 6" sub, I would only eat the insides, not the bread. I still do not eat much salads (lettuce) but the chicken, tomatoe etc. the lettuce feels you up to fast, and gives you very little in anything, ie, protein, calcium. I still have to fight everyday with wise choices, so those days I really need some ice cream or a cookie, it is not so much. Everything in moderation, is what they say, I do still eat very little when I do eat, and about every two hours I am starving, and eat again. I still have protein bars or a protein shake for a snack or meal sometimes. I like the other poster, battle with that 5 to 10 lbs weight gain and loss. And yes, excercise is still the key to maintaning.

I can honestly eat like a horse. I am taking care of things in an unhealthy manner, but I refuse to gain my weight back. I am not exercising like I should. I could eat a 6 inch sub, but it would make my stomach hurt. I try to eat smaller meals, but I'm not watching things like I used to. :(

IF I allow myself to eat mostly mushy foods or if I drink with my meals I can now eat as much as a person who has not had this surgery. I am almost 4 years post op. I can eat a 6 inch sub, without a problem. If I washed it down with water, I could probably even eat the other half another 6 inch sub say within an hour of the 1st one. It is very alarming. Most days, I am back to relying on good ol will power to not over eat and eat the wrong foods. Yet I still occassionally will have a day where I sit down and try to eat too fast and end up having to puke it all up. Mystery to me. Rosemary (You DID say you wanted me to be honest...there it is.)

I am five and half years postop and it varies. Sometimes I can eat a whole sandwich, other times a half. I haven't see any rhyme or reason for this. Sometimes my activity level dictates how much I can eat. I eat more if I drink when I eat. Also, wine gives me the munchies teehee. Paula

I'm 2 years, 2 months post-op, and I do feel like I can eat quite a bit at some times, and not so much at others. Like other women posters, I tend to be able to (or feel hungry enough to) eat much more right before my period. I'll just give you a typical day for me, and you can see what you think. I will tell you that my lowest weight was 160, I hovered around 165 for quite a while, then gained back around 10 pounds fairly quickly, but have been maintaining at 173-174 for quite a while, and it hasn't been that difficult to maintain. I do not exercise regularly, and really have not done so since before or after my surgery. Here is a fairly typical day for me: Breakfast, 1/2 large bagel with peanut butter and jelly; snack - grapes or orange; Lunch - Lean Cuisine entree, piece of fruit, 2 small cookies; Dinner - usually a 3-course type meal with chicken, beef, or pork, potatoes, rice, or pasta, and salad or veggie, plus sometimes bread; sometimes I eat an evening snack like peanuts or pretzels, but not always. I will admit to a continuing addiction to chocolate, and I generally have a small amount of something chocolate every day, whether it is a couple pieces of candy or a small bit of chocolate cake (and no, I don't use the sugar-free stuff). I have been keeping a little more stringent watch lately, as I definitely don't want to go above 175, and I realize that I may need to make further adjustments in the future in order to maintain my weight loss, such as exercising regularly. I was actually a better exerciser when I was heavy than I am now, which really doesn't make sense, but that's my reality for now.

Heh, I love this. I am 4 years post op and like others, can sometimes eat alot and other times, not much at all. I will give examples of large amounts of things that I actually have eaten in a moment of weakness. By no means is this common, but it has actually been done. A little over half a totino's party pizza, Arby's beef and cheddar (I did take off alot of the bun), Three pieces (w/o crust) of french toast, two big pancakes w/ an egg. (I wanted to die after that meal), half of the New Orleans seafood from Ruby Tuesdays, hmm...I actually haven't had a 6" sub since my surgery, but I'm pretty sure I could eat it. LOL However, most days don't include that kind of eating. For example, today I have had a small salad, 10 shrimp, 1/4c broccoli and a 1/4c of mashed potatoes. I'll probably have a little snack later, but these amounts are more typical.

I am 3 years out, I am maintaining my 155 weight loss. Like you there are days I can eat and eat, it seems I never get full, other times I eat a little and I am stuffed. I also eat a small sub and some chips and that fills me up, but before the WLS I was eating a large sub and tons of chips and I probably could eat another sub on top of that, so I feel eating a small sub is great. Like on Thanksgiving I could only eat a little bit,, but boy later that night I ate my favorite turkey sandwhich with stuffing and cranberry sauce on it and I ate the whole thing. Most of the time instead of chips I eat carrot sticks, I always have them in the house.

3+ years and maintaining...but I can definitely eat a Subway 6 inch sub. It will fill me up more than it would have before though and I doubt I could do a large sub, which I haven't tried. At home I even find myself going for seconds some days and sometimes I definitely am eating too much. Thank God I still seem to malabsorb. I still can't drink with meals though because it fills me up too much and I can't eat half the quantity of pasta I used to. While I can eat everything now, I still have to be careful with pasta because I can get really uncomfortably full with that if I'm not careful. And while I can eat a hamburger with bun at home, I can't always do one of those massive restaurant hamburgers.

If you are not gaining weight, then it is not too much.

I am 9 years post-op and I cannot eat a 6" sub at once. Every time I eat I get full fast and I also get often. I eat every 2 hours small portions. (What I mean by small protions 1 to 2 oz maximum). I do eat at least 6 time a day.

Hi all, I am post op 5 years and it seems we are all kind of in the same boat. I can eat a 6 inch sub, but would not be able to eat the bag of chips with it. I can eat a small burger and a couple of fries at once, but it varies. Some days more, some days less. I have lost 160 lbs and I am a size 16 (was a 28) and my Dr. is happy with that. Says it is perfect for my body type. My bloodwork is better then my Docs! I am in perfect health. I thought I was going to be skinny but I am not, and that's ok. I am HEALTHY! I have been at my current weight for 2 yrs. Donna~

Well, I am a little over a year post-op and I feel like I eat too much. First, I dont eat right and hardly exericise. I'm a school teacher and I can never finish the lunch plate they fix me. But there are times, when I feel like I eat and eat and I'm never satisified! I just hope and pray that I dont regain any of the weight I've lost.
