Question:
I HAVE FAIRLY NEW PIERCINGS, WILL THEY HAVE TO COME OUT?
MY SURGERY IS SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 1ST. MY NAVEL WAS PIERCED APPROX. 2 MONTHS AGO AND MY TONGUE ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO. WILL THEY HAVE TO COME OUT? AND DO YOU THINK THEY WILL CLOSE UP ON ME? — PINKPANTHER2403 (posted on August 31, 2005)

They will definitely have to take them out for surgery.

yes they will have to come out. Your tongue should not heal up that quick
you can put it back in soon after surgery. Your navel however may be a
different story, you will have an inscision there so it may be for the best
that you keep that out for awhile. Take it from someone with peircings, it
will not close..good luck Amy

Double check with your admitting and pre-op nurse, but you can sub plastic
jewelry the day of surgery and then later put the real ones back in. The
belly ring will probably have to just be out completely. For my peircings
though I put in plastic rings. Also, I let my tongue close a long time
before having surgey and it closed in like a few days, and I know my nose
will close in like an hour

It all comes out for surgery. Dr. Marymore told me i can't wear my tounge
ring after surgery ever again, because i could swallow it and it would mess
with my stomach, something like that. Tounge closes up in a few hours,
belly button closes up quickly too, plus after the surgery, your all
swollen, you can't really wear a ring, and then your going to have a wicked
scara couple inches above your belly button, doesnt really look good with a
ring. Good luck with your surgery. If you want a peircing post op, go for
your nose or something, though nose hurts like hell!

PIERCINGS ALL HAVE TO BE REMOVED BEFORE SURGERY OF ANY TYPE. THIS IS FOR
YOUR OWN PROTECTION. THEY MAY OR MAY NOT CLOSE UP ON YOU, AS EVERYONE IS
DIFFERENT, I WOULD ASK MY DOCTOR OR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL BEFORE THE
OPERATION. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROCEDURE!!!!! :)

Yup! They have to come out... Do you have someone going to the hospital
with you? Have them put the piercings back in once you're out of recovery.
That's what I did and none of mine closed up...

My tongue piercing had to come out (which I took out right before surgery).
After my husband came into recovery, he gave it to me right away.
Typically, tongue piercings take about 24 hours to start to close, but
since it's only 4 months old, you want to make sure that you put it in as
soon as possible afterwards.

To answer you, Yes, all jewlery from piercings will need to be removed. I
have several piercings myself, ears, nipples and labia and everything had
to come out. Good sugesstion is to get the jewlery back into place asap.
Usally with in 24 hours, otherwise it will be more difficult to do so. Out
of all my piercings, I only had 1 that closed up on me due to not getting
the jewlery back in timely and it needed to be re-pieced. As normal make
sure your jewlery is kept in a clean plastic bag wehn you remove it and
that it is clean when you put it back in. Another point you might want to
think about is that after you put your jewlery back in, go back to square
one as if it were a new piercing and main new piercing procedures to
protect it from infection. Good luck to you :) shaz

Hi, I have 13 piercings total. 1 tongue, 1 tragus and the rest ears. I
wasn't told to remove my piercings totally, just that they couldn't be
metal. I had a clear plastic retainer put in my tongue and tragus ($5 each)
and removed all of my earrings. Hope this helps.
