Question:
45 pounds in 5 months. Am I the slowest loser ever?
I had surgery July 22nd of this year. Today I weigh 230 lbs. Am I all alone or are there other slow losers out there? — Roberta M. (posted on December 20, 2004)

You are not alone. I was and am a very slow loser. I have about another 60
lbs to go to get to my doctors goal and I am 11 months out. The only thing
I can say is that everyone is different and it can be very disheartening to
compair yourself to others so don't do it. (I know, easier said than done)
Just concentrate on getting your protein shakes in and exercising. The
important thing is that you are losing!!!!

I'm losing in super slo mo! But, the up side is that losing slowly gives
your skin more of a chance to catch up! Less sag! I had my surgery
4/23/04 and have lost 76 pounds. I still have 63 pounds to go.

I know how you feel. I had surgery August 30 and have only lose 43 pounds.
I read the other profiles and wonder what I am doing wrong. I think we
are just slow losers because I am careful with my protein and water intake
and exercise. My body likes to be fat and is resisting this effort to be
healthy. I quess as long as we are going down we can accept what is
happening. I actually have not been the weight I am in many years and I
like having smaller clothes that now fit. I understand being impatient and
wondering what is wrong.......but nothing is.
Good luck.

I think I hold the record. I had lap RNY 12/3/03. I lost 50 lbs. the first
5 months and nothing in the last 7 months. So I've only lost 50 lbs. in the
first year. I still need to lose 80 lbs. Fat chance, huh?

I wish you best of luck

I thought I was kind of slow losing also (70 lbs in 7 months), but if you
think about it, you are averaging 9 lbs a month which is very good!!!
Without sugery, do you think you would have lost this much? And i bet more
important - is that you look and feel fabulous. I know I do. And thhe
compliments keep coming. I bet you are probably losing inches even when
the scale is not moving. Hang in there. After all, we both started out as
what is considered being a "light weight",, so we lose slower
because we had less to lose then others. If you compare yourself to
someone that had much more to lose - you will see that percentage-wise we
are right where we should be. And you will be thrilled to see the
difference in how ckose we are to our goal than others with more to lose.

Don't get discouraged!!!!! Everyone's metabolism is so different. I have
been able to not fret over the weight loss, but on the fact that I feel
better. the weight loss will follow. Keep you chin up and just enjoy
life!!!

This may be a unique perspective, but I think there can be something
positive that comes from some WLS patients being slow losers. See, all our
life people have been telling us it is our fault, that we are gluttons,
that we have no self-control, that if we really wanted to lose the weight
we would, that we should just push our plate away, etc. But now you have
gone and done something very brave and taken the bull by the horns by
having the surgery. So, if you are still having some difficulty losing the
weight, now that is proof for everyone that BEING OVERWEIGHT WAS NOT YOUR
FAULT, it was beyond your control, and that there can be many more factors
other than food that cause weight problems. Please do not despair, do not
give up, and take into consideration things like other health problems,
medications, stress, female issues, and heredity.

Don't get discouraged! I started out a lightweight - about 248 lbs. I
stopped losing at 9 months out. And I mean stopped. Tried everything to get
it going again. And I had only lost about 60 lbs. Well, here I am, 26
months post RNY, and 4 months post abdominoplasty. About the middle of
October, I started losing again! I am down 17 lbs since then. I don't know
what caused it to start up again. Maybe my body is just ready to lose more.
Don't ever think you are a failure. Just be patient with yourself.
