Question:
I have tried to write at least 10 people who were about my size to ask questions

about weight loss, none have e-mailed me back so I thought I could get better support here. I had the lap rny on october 7. I was 260 and I am 5ft 4" tall. I am 6 weeks out today and have lost 30 pounds total, am I on target are am I going to be considered a "slow loser" Any advice would be nice, Thanks, kim    — KIM B. (posted on November 18, 2003)

You are doing just fine. I haven't had my surgery yet but my surgeon says he expects an average weight loss of 3-4 pounds a week. That put you above average. Keep up the good work. I am also about 5'4 but weigh 308. I hope to have my surgery next month some time. Congrat on being on the losing side. Carolyn B

Don't worry. I started out at 290, have lost 90+ pounds since my surgery in March 2003. I had lost about what you have at 6 weeks. Have slowed down to 1 1/2-2 pounds a week now. But don't obsess. Let your body work for you. It'll come off.

I am 5'3"-5" depends on who measures. I started at 253. I had surgery on 03/03/03. I have lost 100lbs so far. The first month I lost 31lbs. so I would say your 31 in 6weeks is great. Remember those of us with less to lose may lose slower. Most importantly remember it is not a race and that you will get there eventually. Keep up the good work.

Kim, you are doing great! Remember that each person is different and you are doing fine. I had to boost my execise to pick up the pace. Actually I just had to quit sitting around so much and started walking around the block and local stores to give moving. Also I had to watch my carb intake vs my protien and veg/fruit. I also had to put the scale away because I had recognized that old love/hate relationship and being really obsessive with weighing myself and bummed if I didn't lose any that day. I decided that my body would do what it needed to do so long as I did what I needed to do and accept the fact that some weeks will be faster than others and some there may be nothing showing on the scale but the inches are coming off and before too much time it will be off and we will be enjoying so much! SO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK YOU ARE DOING GREAT!!!

sounds like you are doing great, do yourself a big favor and do not compare your losses to others even if they have the same stats as you, everyone is differnt, some loose slow, some fast the importnat thing is to do what your dr tells you and while you can change your eating habits so when you ar at goal you will not gain the weight back on. this tool can work!! all the best to you

Kim, I think you are on track. I'm 5'4" and was 247 going into surgery. It's been a little over three weeks, and I'm only down 17 pounds. I've spoken with a few people, and feel like even though I was was so overweight and had such a high BMI, I still don't have as much weight to lose as others. So some people my plateau around my current weight after dropping 40-50 pounds. I felt like you and was wondering why I was dropping as quickly as others. But everyone, EVERYONE, is different, and we all lose differently. But we all will lose! :-D

I was 250 day of surgery 2/11/03 and 5'4". I'm 145 or was a week ago. lol WEnt from tight 24's to 4/6's and feeling Great! You are doing great. We all loose differently. I kinow you have read that here somewhere before...lol Enjoy the journey. It will come off and remember add exercise to the mix and watch the results! I only weigh/measure on the 11th of every month. Usually, when the weight loss doesn't show the inches are still coming off. Best of Luck!

I am 5'3" and was 260 when I started my weight loss process on 10/1 with my open RNY. I am now 7 weeks out and down 30 pounds. That is with 3+ weeks of a plateau. I consider myself lucky to still be at 30 pounds with the plateau stuck in there. I never though I'd get off the plateau, but I am and hoping now the scale will continue to move. I weighed in on Sunday at 230 and won't weigh again until this upcoming Sunday. (Promised myself starting this week I wouldn't be a slave to the scale! - Hope I can keep that promise.)

I am 5'5 and was 265 day of surgery on Oct 16th. I am down 30 pounds as of yesterday. I sometimes think it's coming off slow also. Everyone's body is different. I'm trying not to weigh myself so often!!

That is an average loss not a slow one.

I was 5'5" and 262# pre op. I was on the same loss curve as you. There will be those who lose faster than you and some who lose slower, but I have learned that my rate is just right for me. You are on target. Need encouragement? Keep on track, when you fall off track (and you might) get right back to what you are suppose to be doing. I am almost 4 months out and am down over 70#. I broke 200 a week ago, very exciting! Want specifics email me! Good luck!

You sound like you're right on track. I was a little slow getting started (7 lbs lost 1st week, 20 lbs lost in the first month), but then something just kicked in and the weight literally FELL off. Now, at 11 mos post, I'm 5 lbs below my original goal weight, with a BMI of 24. (285/155, 5'7.5"). Cheers!
