Any kind of food lists would be great for pre-op early weeks? I am looking for somthing cheesey that of course is easy to chew up.    — TRACEY W. (posted on May 3, 2003)

I didn't try this but you might want to, (understanding anything new you try at this early post-op may make you sick.) Try a spoonful of Campbell's cheddar cheese soup. Be sure to check the fat and sugar content. If it is high, you probably won't be able to tolerate it this soon. Also, if you use milk instead of water, the milk sugars may also make you sick. A few weeks down the road to recovery, you might try kraft cheddar cheese slices. I was able to tolerate small bites of that. It comes indivdually wrapped like the regular american cheese slices, but has less fat and more flavor. Cream cheese is also a possibility, but try to get a low fat one, as at this early stage, fatty foods are going to make you very, very ill. You will probably always have to watch how much fat and sugars you consume.

I loved cheese nips when I was an early post-op. They were allowed on the soft foods and pureed diet by my doctor because they completely break down in water. I love all the different varieties and enjoyed finally having something to crunch :>)

String cheese is easy to chew up and sort of melts in your mouth when chewed. The big question is does your plan allow you to eat solid foods yet? I was allowed to eat solid foods starting week 2 so I had eggs with cheese as my first meal. I put a slice of reduced fat american cheese on almost anything I heat up. String cheese is somthing I can always count on when other foods are not going well. Many days I eat 2 string cheese sticks for a meal.

Have you tried ricotta cheese? You can almost make lasagna without the noodles & meet. Just take some part-skim ricotta, a little bit of tomato sauce & some part skim mozarella cheese & some italian seasoning and wahla (or however that is spelled) you have something cheesey and easy for an early post op. I also loved the cheese-its. They make junior size (if you can find them, I can't find them anymore) Do NOT get the reduced fat as they have MORE carbs (actually double) and more sodium then the regular - just have a little bit, which is all your tummy will be able to handle anyway. I also liked farmer cheese...(it usually is with the creamcheeses) let it sit for about 10 minutes and have it with a little of the cheese its. YUMMY :)

Pureed or well mashed refried beans with cheese. Yum! But I personally couldn't have these until 3rd week post-op. We are on clear liquids first 3 days home, then full liquids for a week then gradually move to pureed for 6 weeks.

What really worked for me within 2 weeks post-op was the pinto's and cheese from taco bell. I couldn't eat them all at once, I added a bit of the mild taco sauce...after having just the protein drink....the beans tasted really good...and I thought I didn't like beans. Maybe that helps.

Karen took the words right out of my mouth! When I started eating pureed food after 3 weeks of liquid, someone suggested TacoBell pinto n cheese (which I ate before, so I knew I liked it)and I was just so happy and it tasted so good, I even always order it with extra cheese and add more mild sauce. I ate this 2 times a day everyday and for the next 2 weeks along with my protien of course! I still eat it when im craving fast food, I never eat out except for this :o) Good luck!
