Question:
Co-morbidities enough for approval with Aetna Open Choice?

I'm 5'5 1/2" & 240# BMI 39 (about) I have only been on one dr rx'd diet (Meridia) and he didn't even do a follow-up even though my BP was spiking. Have always been overweight & have dr files proving that. Have L4-L5 ruptured disc (5 epidurals, so far & taking Vioxx & Lortab daily), degenerative disc disease, insomnia (taking Halcion),heel spurs (in the past)(all dr. documented)stress incontinence, swelling feet & ankles, possible hernia (lots of heartburn, reflux feeling) and lovely snoring started lately. These last 4 or so have not been dr documented. I have 1st consult w/surgeon April 15th, but am anxious about getting approval. Have heard both good & bad about Aetna. The Vioxx that I am taking daily is putting pounds on me fast, so I might be about 40BMI by the time I see the surgeon. GOD what is wrong with me...I'm wanting to gain weight!?!? Help...please give advice    — leighsme (posted on February 28, 2002)

Just an FYI... I just calculated your BMI with your height as 5'5" and 240 and it gave it as 40. Do you HAVE to add that 1/2"? My surgeon never measured me. I just completed a form. If you are measured, slouch a little and you will lose that 1/2". This is a time when you don't want to stand tall. Just a thought...Shelley

I have really only heard good things about Aetna. I have been with them since 1/1/02 my surgeon sent in the paperwork 1/11/02 and I was approved on 1/25/02 (my birthday) and was called with a surgery date. I have the HMO type. Aetna is very good at doing what is best for their clients. Think about it, it also is good business because in the long run this saves on other medical problems in the future. Good luck.

I had Aetna Open PPP, and they were great. It them 3 weeks to get an approval, and they were always helpful whenever I would call and check on the progress. They even told me over the phone what my chances were of getting approved. It looks like you wouldn't have a problem, but you may want to call them or visit their medical bulletins section on their website. Good luck!
