Question:
I need to know if I need to see a psyciatrist or psycologist
Im getting different answers on this question, I really need to know which I should make an appointment with. I would really appreciate an answer to this dilema, thank you. — BARBARA A. (posted on January 9, 2002)

It depends on which your surgeon requires, check with them. Besides some
surgeons have everyone approved by a single person, no use doing it twice
and those not familiar with WLS can be a problem.

My surgeon told me it didn't matter. As long as they have a license to
practice.

If your surgeon doesn't require either one, go to a psychologist. They
have a PhD, but psychiatrists have an MD and nearly always charge
considerably more. If this is someone you're going to see only to satisfy
a psych consult before you can the surgery, don't pay any more than you
have to.

It depends on why you are seeking services. If you are going for a pre op
psych eval and have no previous mental health history, a psychologist can
do the testing and report for you. If you have problems that might need
meds as well as therapy a psychiatrist can do both. I personally think
psychologist and social workers do a better job of therapy and often are
affiliated with a psychiatrist who can prescribe meds if needed. Good
luck!

ASK YOUR SURGEON. Mine will allow a psychologist, but PREFERS a
psychiatrist. He also likes me to have someone who has experience in
evaulating pre-op WLS patients. They can usually refer you to someone as
well.
