Question:
liquid diet
What exactly can we eat when we are on a liquid diet a week before surgery? Can we have anything else besides broths, protein shakes, s/f jello and popsiscles? — cuppaloopy (posted on November 13, 2009)

All doctors are different so, I would check with your doctors. I was
thinking along the same line as you. Yesterday I had my appointment to
sign consents and was started on my liquid diet, which consists of 4
carnation instant break fast per day and only water to drink. Good Luck

If it can fit through a straw, it is considered a liquid. Don't use a
straw though. Causes gas. But if you can see through it and it will
(figure of speech) fit through a straw, it is a liquid. Or when melted is
a liquid. That pretty much narrows it down to s.f lemonade, crystal lite,
tea, hot or cold, decaf coffee, protein (thinned), broth.

For 2 weeks prior to my surgery my Dr. told me to have protien shakes,
except the day before my surgery. I also had popsicles, clear broth,&
SF jello. I would do what your Dr. tells you to do.

Each surgeon 's rules are different. Ask them for details if your unsure.
They are your biggest supporters in understanding why they have you do
something their way.

I was on a liquid diet 3 days pre-op. I was allowed to have any liquids
that when put to a light you could see through it. Cranberry juice, coffee
w/o sugar and milk, diet gingerale. Don't forget, this is your journey and
you need to do whatever the doctor says to get to where you want to be.
Get creative in your mind and pretend that when you have your jello, that
it's pizza. LOL Keep a smile on your face and you'll be just fine. Once
you reach your surgery date, time is going to whirl by so fast you're going
to have to hang on to something. :D Good luck!

I will give you exact wording on my paperwork from my surgeon, although
mine is for 2 weeks. It says:
1. Slim-Fast High Protein/optima or Boost Glucose control shakes, 5 shakes
per day. Do not substitute other products that may have the same brand
name, but not the same high proten, low carbohydrate/low sugar formulation.
2. Non-caloric fluids are an important part of the diet plan. Drink at
least 8 fl. oz. of calorie free liquids between meals. You may drink as
much as you want of non-calorie free liquids between meals. You may drink
as much as you want of non-calorie liquids with meals (water or diet
drinks).
He said it is important to keep the high protein up, and low fat, low carb,
etc so to keep healthy for surgery, while also shrinking the liver. good
luck, hope these help you!

My advice to everyone who is going onto the liquid diet; ASK YOUR SURGEON'S
NUTRITIONIST,what you are supposed to do & take. The surgeon &
their staff can answer all your questions better than anyone else.
