Question:
Will drinking too much water at one time stretch my pouch?
I drink water and am wondering if normal drinking, not sipping, will stretch my pouch? — mari F. (posted on August 23, 2009)

No, water will not accumulate and expand like solid foods. It might be a
little uncomfortable, but will slow out of the pouch. Thing is it might
back up into the esophagus, and that can be a little distressing or lead to
vomiting. Just remember the key here in all things is moderation and
chewing very thoroughly.
I had a RNY July 2nd 2008.

As long as you are not having any difficulty swallowing your water, there
should not be a problem. The stomach is a muscle and will stretch or
shrink depending on regular habits. The thing you want to watch out for is
constant overfilling of your pouch, esp. with food. Just slow down and
enjoy what you are drinking and eating. That will help you become full
sooner, and will help you maintain the size of your pouch. (Also, try not
to drink with meals, as that will cause the food to slide through faster,
and you'll be able to eat more and will also get hungry again sooner.)
Are you a Lap-Band or By-pass patient? The thing I'd be concerned with as
a Lap-Bander is why are you able to take big gulps of water. You may need
to check with your surgeon to see if it's time to add more fluid to the
band.
I hope that helps.
