Question:
Does anyone else out there take topamax and how if at all did it effect your weight
loss. I am up to 75 mg a day working toward 100. I am not sure how far my Doctor is wanting to go with it. I go back to see my psych doc April 2nd. Thanks for your help! Lesleigh in Ga. — lesleigh07 (posted on March 18, 2009)

I was on topamax both before and after surgery and it didn't help either
before or after surgery. I can't say it affected my weight at all. I was
only only it for 3 months before surgery and almost 4 months after. I am
onto bigger and experimental treatment for my chronic headaches and
migraines. Good luck to you my friend. I know it's hard

I was on 50mg topamax for about a year, without WLS, and lost about 85
pounds. I just wasn't hungry when I was taking it.

I've been taking topamax for a year now and my Psychiatrist said it would
help me lose weight but, it didn't. I didn't gain any weight but, didn't
lose any. I was taking it for Bipolar and it really didn't seem to do much
except get rid of my headaches.

I don't want to discourage you but I took 400mg a day for over a year and
did not have a weight loss. I took it for neuropathy but my Dr. said it
might have the pleasant effect of letting me take off some pounds. Didn't.
I thought great. Guess I was one of those it doesn't help so I went the
gastric bypass route and now have lost 150 lbs. I am so happy I decided to
do this. Each of us has to make their own choices and do what is best. I
have no regrets. I have gone from a size 34 to a 14-16. Life is so much
better. I am healthier and mobility is soooooo improved. Good Luck and
God's Blessings,

I take 100 mg in the morning and 200 mg in the night for migraine
prevention. It is not helping much after the surgery as before the surgery
but I have lost 94 lbs in 5 months with the RNY.

I am on 75 mg of Topamax, working my way up due to being in menopause and
having daily migraines (oh joy! - why can't I get hot flashes like everyone
else????). I am 5 years out from RNY, initially lost 140 pounds and have
kept that off. Since starting Topamax, I have lost 17 pounds (wahoo!). I
am never hungry and have to remind/force myself to eat. I am also off my
regular bipolar meds (no need to be on both) and have decreased (per doc
orders) my anti-depressant and blood pressure meds, since Topamax also
covers those too. Check with your psych doc. Good luck. Kathy

I am on 50mg of topomax twice a day for migraine prevention it has worked
well for me. I have been on it over 1 year before surgery and I am 6 weeks
post-op it still seems to be working. I have not ever noticed anything
about my weight either way. I hope this helps. Good Luck Stacie:0)

I was on Topomax for migraines and had the wonderful effect of having my
appetite suppressed, but after about a yr my appetite came back. BUT, I am
also on Effexor and that is known to cause weight gain- it is just that
Topomax seemed to be able to counter that effect for that first yr. I am
now off of Topomax, but have to take Effexor still. Effexor weight gain is
an issue of concern for my GP and specialist for my getting WLS, as they
too are worried about post-surgery weight gain.

My first question would be: Why are you taking it? Do have seizures?
Migraines? That's what that drug is for. It's not to be taken for weight
loss, that just happens to be one of the side effects of the drug. I would
hope that people aren't using this drug for anything other than specific
illnesses. As you have already read, people are different and will react
quite differently to medicines.
