Question:
Question about post-op protein intake

I am about 5 weeks out from RNY revision and wondering if not getting enough protein can cause weight loss to stall? It seems like I've been weighing the same for at least a week and the only thing I haven't been doing 100% is getting all of my protein in. I read how alot of people just have weight fall off and I am getting so frustrated and I am trying so hard.    — taiyahsmom (posted on July 26, 2008)

I had stomach stapling in 1995 and a Revision to RNY this year, 02/01/2008. I hit a "plateau" at about 5 weeks out that lasted 3 weeks. Don't worry, it will pass and you'll start losing weight again. it's just your body reacting to change...

A stall or a plateau is perfectly normal, seems to happen 3-5 weeks out.... very common. Keep doing the right thing and the weight will start coming off again. Your body needs time to adjust to the massive changes that are taking places and it is actually important that these things happen. Frustrating, but, part of the deal I do suggest you track everything for a week or two and the numbers may show you something. Could be hormonal water weight as well, cut yourself some slack and keep fighting the good fight. Good luck and welcome to the loser's bench, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I am now going on 5 months since my RNY, but I had a really difficult time getting enough protein in a day until I found a few items at GNC that helped me. The first was the New Whey Liquid Protein. It is 3.1 fluid oz with 42 grams of protein 0 sugars & 0 fats I have found it in fruit punch and orange flavors. The second is the Protein Slam. It is 3.5 oz with 45 grams of protein, 0 sugars and 0 fats. I have found it in Lemon Lime, Fruit Punch and Orange flavors. Both the New Whey and the Protein Slam have screw on tops, so I drink have of one in the morning before work and save the other half for the next day. The next is the Isopure drinks. They are GREAT! They are 20 oz with 40 grams of protein, again 0 fays and 0 sugars. They come in Blue Raspberry, Mango Peach, Fruit Punch, Green Tea and Black Tea flavors. They are not a shake! I take mine to work and put it on ice in a glass and drink it like I would a regular glass of tea or crystal light. Plus, since we need to be drinking at least 64 oz of fluid a day, just one of these gets you started. When you can eat regular food, you can try the Eat Good Look Great Pure Protein Bars. The Chewy Choc Chip packs 32 grams of protein and still taste pretty good. I could not stomach the shakes. I would drink them and they would just come right back up. This stuff taste good and will give you your needed grams of protein. Along with the food you are eating, you will get more than your daily requirements of protein. Good Luck!!!

Yes it can be to lack of protein. Lack of protein can also result in hairloss. You will lose less fat and burn the little muscle you have from lack of protein.

Not enough protein causes lack of weight loss and also it causes hair loss. With the protein you have less hair loss and also you nails grow much better. When I come to a weight stall I always practice PEW which is P=protein E+exercise W=water. When you practice PEW it always works, at least it has for me. Good luck.

I am also 5 weeks post. My weight totally stalled from weeks 3-5. No weight loss and lots of doubt that all of this was for nothing. I guess this is why my doc said don't ever get on the scale, just keep following the plan. Of course I can't stay off the scale but have keep on keeping on and now the scale is moving down again.Yeah! Hang in there, you can do this!!!! We can do this!!!!
