Question:
I am 6 wks out of RNY and over the last several days have developed this terrible

taste in my mouth. Everything tastes off, even water. I can best describe this as a metallic taste. I brush my teeth 6 times a day, and do not think my breath is bad. HELP!!!!    — dwdeborahmd (posted on July 3, 2008)

At this point, I would say it is ketosis. Your body has started to burn more fat and it has a side affect. Nasty taste in the mouth. Also, you can have a smell from your body. Not BO, just a different kind of smell. All of this is a good thing, but there is not much you can do about it. It will pass but in the mean time, use sugar free breathe mints and continue to brush your teeth. I think I thought is was worst than it really was. Good luck. Paula

I had it right after I got out of surgery 2 weeks ago and its just starting to go away. my doc told me it was from the antibiotics. He told me to get something over the counter callled Nystatin wash. Its a mouth wash that kills fungus. You can get it behind the pharmacy counter with no prescription.

I had this too....to some extent. I attributed some of it to the iron in the supplements I was chewing. When I could start swallowing vitamins..... I was glad....because I didn't have that odd taste in my mouth. It lingered all day...and made most of my food taste foul. I'm sure the other postings are more accurate....but it went away for me after I stopped the chewable vitamins that were high in iron. Good luck! Cheryl

Deborah, I agree with Paula. That metallic taste was hard for me to get past, but it did go away. Try not to let it interfere with you getting in your fluids, vitamins & proteins. I did, and now I have to take a few extra supplements and extra protein to get my numbers back where they should be. Wishing you the best! Cindy

I had it too!! with my lapband surgery and it's so funny because at first I thought it was the bottled water I was drinking so I got another one and it tasted funny too...so then I thought that maybe it was just a side effect from the anesthesia but it only lasted a few days...but it makes your mouth taste like iron. Yuk! I think the sf orbit gum helps. Hang in there!

I chewed Freedent Spearmint between meals. I had this while taking antibiotics for diverticulitis flares.

Ketosis because of the rapid weight loss. I'm 4 months out & it's gotten better. for a while it did make everything taste weird, started drinking crystal lite rasp ice & cherry/pom because that helped counteract the bad taste

You will have this for about a year while you are in Ketosis (losing weight rapidly) It goes away eventually when you are no longer burning fat and protein. It's one of the first signs of Ketosis which is exactly what you want in order to lose weight...In normal people this could be a bad sign...Brush often... use mouthwash...mints...Sorry...you are stuck with it for a while!
