Question:
Hi, I m 1 yr out of rny bypass surgery and suddenly since last couple of days i have
caught up with running nose and cough, I have always been scared to take medicines after my surgery as most of them out there are NSAID medicines. I want to get rid of my current runny nose, cold and cough. Any suggestions what kind of medicines i can take. I greatly appreciate all your help. Thanks alot in advance. — mrjack (posted on May 15, 2008)

Hi Jack Jack. I also have had RNY and am of course as limited to what kind
of cold meds I can take as you are. What I also deal with is high blood
pressure so I have to be extra careful. I would reccomed a drug called
"Mucinex" it dries up your mucus membraines all over the body.Be
careful and drink alot of water w/this but it does work and it won't keep
you up, or raise your BP or make you sleepy. It is over the counter and is
sold in a DM formula as well to last all day-now that one is for you in the
am only, or else you'll be counting sheep along time to try to sleep that
night. This is a great drug for Bypass people w/runny nose, and cough that
is safe for people of our delicate nature. Best wishes to you.I know if you
take this your troubles will be gone soon.give it at least a week to
totally dry you up so it doesn't come back.Benedryl is useless when you
can't think or do anything but be a zombie. This RX doesn't do that at all.
Have a blessed day and feel better soon!

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling poorly.
The best answer is, of course, speak to a doctor or be seen, even at least
call the bariatric office from your surgery and ask them. In my
experience, I have taken DayQuil and NyQuil without any problems. The
fever reducer/pain reliever in this product is Tylenol which according to
my surgeon is fine. I've taken other products for sinus allergy and what
not (i.e. sudafed like products) and have never personally had any adverse
reactions. Hope you feel better. Leslie

I also had RNY and just a few days out of surgery got the worst cold ever!
I used the Zicam nose spray and it worked wonderfully! Good Luck!

I'm sure the over the counter cold meds are fine if they contain tylenol.
Personally, I take a precribed NSAID for my chronic back pain &
Osteoarthritis with food. Occasionally, I get gastric
irritation/discomfort and take Nexium for a few days until it's gone.
Cordeceium-D (spelling) is advertised as not affecting BP.
Just spend some time at Walmart in the cold/flu section and I'm sure you
can find something or ask the pharmacist or your surgeon. I agree, the
Mucinex is OK.

I use mostly natural remedies. For the stuffy nose I use a "netti
pot" or sinus rinse bottle. It totally cleans out the sinus cavities
with warm salt water and ZERO meds. It works sooooo great for allergy
season too. I load up on Vitamin C and for my throat I use lblack licorice
drops...tea with honey and lemon helps and before bed a gargle of warm salt
water numbs the throat. The sinus rinse cleans out the sinuses thqat cause
sore throat form sinus drip...So it works very efficently to help all your
symtoms including pressure headaches. I know it sounds gross...but
everyone I have told about this and they tried it...LOVE IT! My entire
family has their own rinse bottle...It's really awesome...

Sorry to hear you have a cold. I just got over my first cold/upper resp
infection post RNY. I took tylenol severe sinus day and night time
formula. Also took Benadryl at night to sleep. Tylenol isn't an NSAID.
Get well soon!

Tylenol does make a "Cold Head Congestion", it's for
headache/sore throat,nasal congestion and coughing. Also it's a Daytime
Non-Drowsy formula. Best of Luck.......

I can't take any oral decongestants, so i have been taking afrin nasal
spray for several yrs or dristan. Get the moisturizing type. Works great.
And of course Musenex for the chest.
