That's wierd. Sounds like fat discrimination to me. If you had needed
cancer treatments would they just decide not to cover it? Maybe they would
like to pay for all the medical complications you will have if you keep the
weight on. Possibly they need an education about the benefits of the
surgery. I can't see how a benefit that is given to everyone in the company
does not apply to you. I wouldn't let this slide. Hopefully there is an
expert in the group who can advise you about if this is legal. Good luck in
your quest - that must be really frustrating!

My husband works for the City of Jacksonville. Five years ago it paid for
my open RNY. I developed a fistula and staple line disruption and was told
that there is now an exclusion, we have Aetna. After determining the
medical necessity of the revision they paid for it. Keep trying.

I work for a county and they are self insured but has an adminstrater. The
ins would cover but my county had it as an exclusion. I went before the
Commissioner's Court with my diet history and won. Now I am scheduled for
surgery May 5. If you just work for a basic company, i would go before the
board of President or something and plead my case so they can lift it.

My employer has an exclusion for Bariatric surgery written into our
policies, as we have 78000 employees and more than 15000 have a BNI of over
40. It is not uncommon for large employers to that this an other option to
keep the policy cost down. I pad $over 40,000.00 Cash for my surgery.
Best of succes to you.
