Question:
5 days post op - popcicle dilemma!!
I am 5 days post op from lap RNY. I'm so sick of broth and jello and I just remembered someone saying we could have SF popcicles. So I bought Edys fruit pops before surgery and I just looked at them and they say "no sugar added" but there is 2 g of sugar in them and also have splenda. So my sister is buying Blue Bunny pops that says sugar free and has no sugar but does have sugar alcohol, which I think is from the splenda. I don't want to call my doctor and ask a food question on Saturday...LOL...can anyone tell me if it is okay if I eat these? I'm having a hard time getting in a lot of water and I'm getting headaches and I think it might be dehydration setting in. Any suggestions will be very appreciated, thank you!!! - Tammy — itzmetami (posted on December 1, 2007)

Congrats on your surgery! I was told by my NUT that it was ok to have the
popsicle brand sugar free popsicles. I had my surgery on 11/27/07 and have
had the popsicles and honestly enjoyed them. Good Luck to you

Splenda's OK, but sugars and sugar alcohol are not according to my nut. I
haven't had my surgery yet, but others in my support group say the Popsicle
brand has ones we can eat.

I am 3 months post op and my surgeon said ANY kind of sugar free label is
fine, I bought Edy's...there is 2 kinds of sugar-free , both boxes have 3
kinds in them, all of them are great....i was told not to do more than 3 a
day....try to push more water (use crystal light) that helps!! Good luck!

Have your sugar free pops, that is what I was addicted to for about 2
weeks..lol. But when reading your labels, look at total carbs, regardless
of weather it is sugar or sweetner, a popcicle should not have more than 2
or 3 carbs.

Congratulations on your surgery. You can have the popsicles, not to worry.
I thought those first two weeks were horrible, I made it through the first
week but by the second, I was going crazy drinking broth, water, jell-o,
popsicles and crystal lite. The night before I was to go on soft foods I
started eating because I was so fed up with the liquid diet. I made it
through though and lost 36 lbs those first 2 weeks. I am now 4 weeks out.
Get your fluids in though, I am having trouble with that now. Good luck
and enjoy the popsicles.

I'm sure you've got more than your daily allowances of answers to this
question! SMILE.... Edy's...LOVE THEM. I am 5 weeks out, almost 6, and eat
them about twice a day. I tried the Kemps brand that are sugar free, and
they tasted weird to me. Edy's taste so much more fruity too, and are more
slushy...which was easier for me to handle. They don't taste like they're
loaded with chemicals, like some do. So enjoy, and like everything....in
moderation. I also would take Crystal Lite and put it in a plastic cup and
let it freeze until slushy....that helps too. Just a suggestion. Good
luck and congrats on your new life's journey. Hugs....Cheryl

Just get the standard sugar free popcicles at your local supermarket. Look
at the label, as they normally have a selection of a few flavors. Choose
the box with the flavors you prefer. Most RNY patients use the SF pops to
satisfy their chewing "urge" in the intial stages past surgery.
The small amount of sugar this soon after surgery may cause some dumping,
which you want to avoid if at all possible.

Edy's are by far the BEST!!!! I still LIVE on them! I was given the
"Blue Bunny" ones in the hospital and thet tasted yucky! So now I
have to hunt for the "No Sugar Added" Edy's, everyone carries the
stuff with sugar. The 2 grams of sugar should be fine, I was told to check
the first four ingredients for the "Sugar" if it is not there, it
is fairly safe to assume the sugars are "natural" and should be
tolerated well! I say go with what you can on the "popsicles",
because I KNOW how hard it is to get the "fluids" and
"protein" in early on! You will need the "hydration"!
And Yup! The "sugar free" fudgesicles are fine also, you could
even freeze the SF pudding as well. I also was told all of this does count
towards your fluid intake. Good Luck!

I ate Dryers Sugar Free popsicles 4 years ago when I had my surgery with no
problems. They are VERY yummy!

Hi, I was always told that I could have anything with 2-3 grams of sugar or
less per serving. I am one year post op and at goal and have never had
dumping syndrome so go ahead they sound fine. I did accidentally eat sugar
once, one bite, and felt nauseas for a couple of hours (my hubby brought me
sugar free fudge from the shore, only I had my neighbors by mistake with
the sugar, one bite and I thought it tasted too good to be true, turns out
I was right, LOL) The SF fudge pops taste great too. Don't fret, this stage
will be over soon and before you know it you will be eating normally. The
first few weeks are the hardest, the rest is a piece of cake or should I
say sugar free cake! Best of luck and welcome to the loosers bench.

Congratulations on your surgery! I am 6 months out and lived on popsicles
for a few weeks in the beginning. Of course they were the sugar free ones.
I have found that the popsicle brand of Diet Root Beer, Diet Dr Pepper and
Diet Orange Crush are very very good. It was a comfort to have them! Be
care of "no sugar added" products, check to see the actual sugar
content. It should be under 2-3 grams. In addition as a treat, there are
sugar free Jello puddings out there. I found that those were soothing too.
Keep up the good work, the first few weeks are the roughest. :)

Hi there is a popsicle brand sugar free popsicles at walmart. If it says
no sugar added it just means that they have not put extra sugar in it but
that the ingrediants have sugar in them.

Sorry I forgot that there is also Blue Bell brand sugar free bullets.

Congrats on changing your life! I had RNY in 10/2004. I lived on those
NSA fruit pops for months. "No sugar added" is good - it is the
refined sugar that will trigger "dumping"....Try scrambled eggs,
too - you will need the protein to get some strength...My first week home,
I choked on my jello - so remember to eat slowly and take miniscule bites!
And if you have as great a dr as I had, those are questions that he really
won't mind!

Hi! My Nutritionist told me that if you look at the ingredients and sugar
is not in the top six then it is usually a natural sugar and ok to eat. I
am 2 months out and I keep them on hand. My kids have also starting eating
them. Good luck to you! Bev

Tammy, try them and just one at a time, but you will know in a short time
if you can eat them or not. Also, keep in mind that a popsicle is really
only about 2 oz of fluid. It is better than nothing, but they don't count
for much fluid. I used the wal mart brand of sf popsicles when I had
surgery and I loved them, and they helped me a lot, so I am for them. You
just have to try them and see if your body likes them. Take care.

Hi Tammy *Congrats on your surgery! I had my surgery the day before
Thanksgiving... I too was sick of broth and jello (and scrambled eggs-very
quickly)... I wouldn't make it without my SF popcicles. I opted against
the pops with the fruit base for the moment (as fruit isn't part of the
first months allowances)... My favorites are the No Sugar Twin Pops (w/two
sticks--2.25 ozs fluid, and go down very smoothly). The flavors are mild,
not overwhelming. I know I have at least three a day easily. I've been
able to find them at Food Lion in a 12 pack clear plastic bag and at
Walmart in an 18 pack bag. Also, do forget about other beverages like
Crystal Light and SF cider or spiced cider.. these help break up the
monotony also. Good Luck, Leslie

my mom was allowed to have all the popsicles she could handle as long as
they were sugar free or no sugar added. they were easy for her to use in
order to get in her fluids.
