I have read about many people who have had surgery in Mexico and were very
pleased but remember there is no follow up or support which we really need
in order to be successful. Many doctors will work with you on payment
plans or reducing their fees you just have to ask. I am not sure what the
surgery costs because my insurance covered it all but if you need to go to
Mexico, see if a local bariatric group will let you go to them for follow
up and support by paying as you go.

Kathy,
I was a self-pay patient for my DS a little over 4.5 years ago. However,
rather than going to Mexico, I chose to go to Spain to Dr. Aniceto Baltasar
for my surgery.
It's a pretty amazing thing just stepping outside the whole hoop jumping
and rigamarole that oftentimes has NOTHING to do with your need and
qualifications for WLS!
My experience with my surgery with Dr. Baltasar was nothing short of
phenomenal and WAY better than any surgical experience I've ever had here
in the States (before or after)!
The real key to all of this is making sure you have a PCP who is on board
with your plan, and is willing to learn - both about the type of WLS that
you choose (of the many available) and the surgeon you choose. Be prepared
to do some research into your surgeon's credentials and then pass that
information along to your PCP. My PCP went so far as to want me to call
the various credentialling institutions and get recommendations - and I'm
so glad I did! It gave me the confidence I needed to know that I was
indeed going to one of the world's best bariatric surgeons!
So - do your homework! Make sure you choose the surgery that you are 1000%
at peace with living the post-op lifestyle of. Then, choose wisely - not
only is this about the rest of your life - it's investing a huge chunk of
change into your future - and you want a highly reputatble surgeon behind
the scalpel.
If you ever want to chat - just drop me an email, okay? You can also check
out my web site at www.bodybybaltasar.com
Blessings,
dina

I just got back from Dr Valencia (www.affordablebariatrics.com) in
Columbia. It was fabulous and there were 6 other Americans there while I
was there. They took great care of me...

If you will go to forums, it lists first by states, then out of the states.
It has a place that says south of the border. that will give you a lot of
information about surgeons in Mexico and how long they have practiced, etc.
I was surprised, one who is pretty well known, Dr Rumbaut, of Monterrey,
does the surgery on people up to 70. An acquaintance of mine went there and
stayed for 1-2 weeks for the followup. I think the whole thing cost around
$10,000. I've had to pay almost that much out of pocket, with insurance.
