Question:
Fusion: is it common or what?
I've been told that my 'pouch' and my old stomach have 'fused' back together and it is as if the surgery had never been done. I"m only 7 months post-op. what gives? — slkacred (posted on December 19, 2006)

Where is your food going to? What part of your tummu? What happen to the
staples?

Could you give a little more information? Did you have your pouch scoped so
this fusion was seen? Were you stapled, or transected (thinking staple line
failure or fistula)?
Anybody else want to chime in?

I was told that the food was going from my pouch into my old stomach and
"it is like the surgery had never been done". I don't know what
happened to the staples. The surgeon called on me on my cell to give me
the results of the test. He was brisk, abrupt, and seemed in a hurry to
get rid of me. He wasn't giving me time to think of questions. I was so
overwhelmed with what I had just been told that I couldn't think of
questions fast enough and he wasn't volunteering anything. All information
given was strictly in answer to my direct question. He won't do a
revision. He said he could, but he won't. He referred me to two other
surgeons. What could have happened? He said that sometimes as the pouch
and the stomach lie so close together that they 'fuse' back together.
whaddaya think?

Were you originally transected? That is were both parts stapled, stitched,
and cut apart completely? Staple line failure is very common for those not
transected but stomachs growing back together... I was told by the head of
the ASBS its possible but one in a million or some such.

Sounds to me like he's trying to avoid a lawsuit.

Sounds like a SLD staple line disruption, very common when not transected.
Michelle Curran has been thru this, its a VERY common problem! Call your
surgeons offie back and ask if you were transected!
