Question:
EXTREME Itchiness soon after post-op!!!!! Driving me insane!!
Hi everyone. I had lap-band surgery about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago today. Since surgery, I've been experiencing very dry skin and hence extreme itchiness. It gets worse during the course of the day especially at bedtime. Are there any supplements out there that will help lesssen this sensation? Or any creams/ointments that anyone can recommend? This is truely driving me insane!! Please help?!? :) — Jennipharm (posted on March 25, 2006)

Not really, it is from the anesthesia. It will go away. Don't worry. For
now You can use body lotion, and make sure you are drinking enough water,
that will help.

It could be caused from anesthesia but it also could be related to any pain
medication you are on such as Tylenol with codeine, lortab, vicodein any
many others. Make sure you are moisturizing well. Ask your doctor if you
can take liquikd Bendryl to help with the itchig? Jen

Jennifer,
I had my surgery on Dec 12. I had the same problem.
My Dr gave me 3 things to do.
1. drink
2. Drink more
3. After you are sick of drinking - DRINK STILL MORE !!!!
The skin is dry and itchy due to some dehydration. You must get a MINIMUM
64 oz of fluid per day. I was getting my 64 oz but I needed more I
followed his instructions, I drink around 80 oz per day, problem is gone.

Hi Jen,
All of the above reasons for your itchiness are good. Anesthesia dries you
out and the procedure alone is also a good cause. On thing that I did
notice when I read the Lap-band book was, you can never have enough fluids.
So drink. Also for the skin issue the is a product called Aveeno. They have
a wonderful anti itch cream, and it works very well. If that does not do
the trick call your DR. You could be having a mild allergic reaction from
some of the pain medication. Good luck and welcome to the band club --

Hi Jennifer, my contribution to your question is this: I would most
definately consult my surgeon or primary care doctor. As the others have
said, you may be suffering from an allergic reaction. Did you know that
hormones are a major component of secretions/excretions in the human body?
Your primary may check also to see if your might be suffering from anything
related to this.
As for topical applications, lotions and cremes from Eucerine are great.
If you want to spend a little more, Crabtree & Evelyn (they have a web
site) have a MAGNIFICENT hand lotion called La Source Hand Therapy. It
feels like silk and is sooooo smooth. What a way to treat your dryness and
spoil yourself. Eucerine is a product that most physicians recommend.
Good luck,
Sherry

It is from the Anesthesia. YOu may Aveeno Lotion will make a big
difference to the skin (has oatmeal in it that softens naturally). And
also on the really itchy areas some anti-itch cream from walmart does the
trick to relieve the spots that are more dry than others.

I had a similar experience and used Aveeno lotion and took Benedryl at
bedtime. It has stopped. If you can avoid taking a bath or shower every
day, try to. (sponge bath is okey) Also, turn the heat down or
off.....the furnace pulls all the moisturer out of the air and that also
makes it worse.
